Re: 3A-SU Won't start

... Turns out the "fuel cutoff solenoid" that the previous mechanic stuck open is actually some sort of air valve and needs to be closed to start. He basically had created an internal vacuum leak so fuel was never being pulled into the carbs. Unfortunately between the last guy and myself,...

Re: 3A-SU Won't start

for the sake of keeping a long post not so long I left out some details, if you need more direction than what I wrote up above chime in and I will try to give further guidance. Here is a decent Youtube video for tuning the SU carbs on a Datsun, that may be similar to your ASU carbs more so than the ...

Re: Gambler SR5 - Introduction & mystery part

dents on the rear quarter panel can be a bit of PIA to fix, there is inner structure in that part of the car that can be in the way. I have ended up with project cars with dents in that area that appeared to be easy to fix. you have to strip all the interior panels, and for the areas you can not dir...

Re: Turbo Tercel

I see, so it was not the wiper fluid from the windshield reservoir, but rather you were using wiper fluid injection as an intake coolant. That is an interesting solution. I had not heard of anyone using wiper fluid as a turbo coolant, it seems to me there is some soapy component to wiper fluid that ...

Re: 3A-SU Won't start

Those are a great carb set up, if I could find a complete set up to install in my Tercel4wd I would do it. I have owned and worked on a few imported cars with these Asian SU carbs, but I also have extensive experience with the British SU on many older import cars I have owned and rebuilt, as well as...

Re: Voltage regulator pinout

a good pneumatic impact wrench will spin it off. that may be a reverse threat nut, are you sure you are turning it the right direction?

if you have a regular shop you go to often if you bring them the alternator and ask them to break the nut free for you, often they will at no charge.

it does not take much to get them to up the offer: they send you a settlement offer, that when you sign it you agree to accept their first offer, and by signing it you give up all your rights to get compensated. You are not obligated to accept any offer from them. you just refuse to sign their offer...

Re: Turbo Tercel

wow, that is a bummer. live and learn. when ever you make changes, especially drastic ones, I have found most times you can not always anticipate all of the various failure modes that can occur. Until it happens. All you can do is fix it and than move forward, until the next unanticipated failure oc...

Re: ISO: Front and/or Rear Differential

I am not that familiar with how the auto trans is geared (though I have owned two of them). but it seems to me that when the auto trans is in 4wd, it should lock out the drive train so front and rear are mechanically connected together. these cars do not have a center diff like the modern AWD cars, ...

Re: lost 5th gear

yes, that is the fifth gear. on the front side of the front housing wall of the main gear box. if you have replacement parts, as I recall, this is as far as you need to strip it down to replace the broken 5th gear parts (presuming nothing else is damaged).

Re: Which Gear Oil or Differential Oil should I use? Personal Conclusions and discussion. Molybdenum additive use?

I think the addition of an anti friction additive is a good idea on a worn transmission to make it last longer. But it will degrade the effectiveness of the syncros, as you found out. One thing you might try, if you want to keep the anti friction additive, is add some quality ATF that will help the ...

Re: Voltage regulator pinout

I have switched them before, it is not that complicated as I recall. I had a spare alternator in my pile of parts, and the one in my car failed. Being cheap I determined to make it work with what I had, and I did. It was a long time ago, so I could not give you specifics. You might study the wire di...

Re: 1 ct diesel??

I think diesels are a mixed bag, I have owned several diesel powered cars and trucks. Typialcally they are heavier engines, lower RPM and lower HP. they will have good low end torque, but will be lacking at the high end. And it appears the small diesels are not nearly as reliable as the larger ones ...

Re: 1984 Euro Tercel 4WD Wagon

if you pull the vac line from the AAP you should not see fuel leaking out of the vac line, but it could be wet with fuel. The engine vacuum sucks the fuel into the intake manifold, but when not running it can not flow through the line. though you may not see much fuel when you pull off the line, so ...

Re: lost 5th gear

the fifth gear is on the front side of the main gear box, they do fail (usually from abuse by towing or pulling too hard in loaded up hill in 5th), but will disintegrate in the forward chamber, separate from the gear clusters, so it can be driven without noticeable issues. I highly advise NOT to dri...
