Re: Tercel back on the road

that is kind of unusual, but anything is possible with CV axles, most of them on the after market are junk. And do not bother with rebuilt cv axles, most of those are junk out of the box. if you can, only buy new cv axles, but unfortunately the number of companies still making new axles for these ca...

Re: Looking for a front wheel hub

not particuarly hard to find, but they have not made any new ones for perhaps 30 years. the front wheel drive tercels, '83-86 use the same hub, and 4wd through '87-88 would also be the same. likely you would have to find one in a wrecking yard. just to be clear, are you talking bout the part of the ...

Re: Gambler SR5 - Introduction & mystery part

nice set up. I think I would get some generic rubber grommets from the auto parts store and drill a larger hole and have the air line go through the grommet to protect it from chaffing on the metal edge. if the air line fits tight in the grommet it would also make a good water tight seal. that set u...

Re: New Head Gasket Time

the heater core replacement is not difficult, but a lot of work. the whole dash has to come apart. you can either by pass the heater as a temp measure (it is almost summer anyway), or you can throw in a can of Barr's leak should hold it as long as you need to. Do not worry, it will not harm the engi...

Re: Free to good home: Complete 4AFE swap

I will be happy to take this off your hands next time I am down your way. I can get there friday morning in fact. I have an '87 waiting for an engine, this will save me a years worth of spare time. I can pull the existing tank for you, but not sure when I can get it out. do you need it right away? t...

there is a way to tell from the VIN number if it came with auto or manual trans. I do not recall, but someone posted it in the forum some years ago.

Re: New Head Gasket Time

the head gasket on these engines are very sensitive because of a poor coolant circulations pattern, uneven cooling of the head will result in compromising the gasket when it gets near the upper end of the temp gauge (it does not even have to get in the red zone). so it is important to keep the cooli...

Re: CV axle came out but clip stuck in trans

I do not see how a bad cv axles would ruin a wheel bearing, I suppose it is possible. what I have done before was dmage a new bearing when pressing it in to the steering knuckle, it got slightly cocked and would not go in any furhter. I tapped down the high side and it went in the rest of the way, I...

Re: CV axle came out but clip stuck in trans

an ice axe? that is funny. I have a collection of ice axes and ice tools, some go back 40+years, never occurred to me to try and use one to remove a CV axle. I find the "flat bar" type of pry bar used by carpenters in construction to work well. I have also used larger pry bars, but their l...

Re: Driving for Distance

eventually the syncros wear out and they become less effective. double clutching, not so bad once you develope the habbit, is a good solution. I have also switched trans lub and tried a few things to help. I tried the all synthetic gear lube, MTF, but it is so slippery it made my aging syncros act l...

Re: CV axle came out but clip stuck in trans

I had trouble with a clip like this once. there is no other option but to force it out and hope noting breaks off inside. I worked it in and out, hoping to get the clip to "seat" into its groove, and than was able to force it out. I do not recall if I replaced the axle or reinstalled it. I...

Re: New Head Gasket Time

soak it in ATF or other penetrating oil (ATF works the best), heat the block around it, and drill a hole in the center of the broken bolt and use an "EZ-out" tool. you can just buy the one size you need for less than $10. at most auto parts stores. if you can get close to the broken face, ...

Re: CV axle came out but clip stuck in trans

perhaps a prob tool with the magnetic tip. go from both sides (axle hole and drain plug). that car does not have a diff cover, like the tercel, that you can remove to inspect it, as i recall. you might roll the diff back and forth a bit to get it to fall out to the bottom of the housing, again use a...

Re: Fuel Pump Failure

what is the brand? where was in made.

supposedly NAPA gold parts have a lifetime warranty. you might see if they sell a replacement fuel pump for the tercel.

otherwise you may have to go to an electric fuel pump. or scour the wrecking yards for 35 year old factory Tercel fuel pumps.

Re: Texas T4WD 7AGE Project

here are a few pictures I found on the internet, one is an AE86 (RWD) with a motor cycle carb conversion.

the other is a "kit" that used to be sold on ebay. but that manifold looks like it would not be too hard to make from a factory manifold for the engine.
