Re: my old nemesis: another gummed up distributor

I never gave this much thought before I saw this post. I think I'll pull the rotor off and take a peek behind the grease stopper.

Re: New Member. New Tercel!

Here's a couple tech articles about the VV carb that may be helpful... not sure if the "field fix kit" mentioned is available anymore, but the articles describe some of the controls and how they work. http://www.mastertechmag.com/pdf/1992/11nov/199211IS_ToyotaVariableVenturi.pdf https://au...

Re: New Member. New Tercel!

That's low miles for an '87! I'm not familiar with the variable venturi carb, but some quick reading makes it sound nightmarish. I stumbled on this weber conversion kit that might interest you: https://www.ebay.com/p/4034806606 Seems like a chunk of cash, but it might be a big improvement over a pot...

Re: Carburetor mounting gaskets

I finally got around to try a carb swap, and got to see which gasket I was using: 20240317_100603.jpg The vacuum passage bolt and secondary vacuum port need to remain open to sample manifold vacuum as pictured. I thought the 21980 heater was built into the insulator, but I see now it's cemented in p...

Re: Bolt ID Question

Hi Zack... Maybe these bolt extractors would grab it https://www.lowes.com/pd/IRWIN-BOLT-GRIP-5-Pack-Bolt-Extractor-Set/1003021030 I used them successfully on some stripped allen head bolts. I agree with Mark's assessment. If they sweared over the bolt, it's probably cursed... I would pray over it a...

Re: Stock vs. Weber

My bad... I was thinking T4WD. My '83 had the carburetor feedback system and my '88 has it too. FSM says USA Vehicles and Canada 3A-C Engine 4-Speed & Wagon A/T. I found this diagram that might be helpful to the owner of the '82 Corolla Tercel. I see it uses a mixture control valve, which just l...

Re: Stock vs. Weber

The stock carb relies on "computer" controlled air bleeds (EBCV) to maintain optimal mixture based on oxygen sensor signal. So the default rich mixture is leaned out based on conditions. The advantage to retaining the stock controls is compensation for temperature and altitude. If you stud...

Could these be early "low impedance" injectors? This article has an interesting section on injector outputs:

Re: Carburetor mounting gaskets

Here's a diagram I found on the lakelandtoyota site. It appears to show two different options on the lower right. MF2899K.jpg The gasket with the tail off the secondary matches the shape of the insulator, as dlb indicated. The other option is open between the primary and secondary barrels, and also ...

Valve Adjusting Screws

Toyota part #90913-05018. Part name code 13801C. Shown as "discontinued" by various suppliers. While replacing a head gasket, found a few that had overtightened locknuts. I installed Honda D15B engine adjusters, since I had an old cylinder head available. 20240103_191621.jpg The 3AC hardwa...

Re: Lady ran a red turn signal. What to do now

That is unfortunate. Tell her insurance company you want the car replaced. Find similar examples for sale, or recently sold to justify the value. You don't have to accept their initial low ball offer. They might even try to get you to accept partial responsibility for the accident as a condition of ...

These are junkyard steelies that came with 195-65 14 snow tires. I tried striping with a Mack long liner brush... painted the emblems too. I always liked the look of Nascar steelies.

Re: Water pump housing for 1985 wagon

Engine Water Pump Housing is part #16100-1908677. Used on the 1984-1988 Tercel, it might take some salvage yard searching. Maybe a request on the FB page might turn one up. I think new ones contain unobtainium.

Re: Tercel differential rebuild questions

Good to hear you're back on the road. Thanks for following up with the details. A conservative adjustment of ring gear backlash sounds like a step in the right direction. Maybe the noise will reduce some after the gear teeth wear in to the corrected contact pattern. The other day I jumped into my Je...

Re: What size tires?

14" tire sizes have been discussed a lot in the past. Maybe you could take a look at some of those recommendations and use an online tire size calculator to compare 15" possibilities. Seems like many folks deal with full lock rubs as they try to max out the rubber. The wheels look good... ...
