85 SR5 for sale

 Hey everyone. Unfortunately I was offered a smoking deal on another Toyota I can’t refuse, so I have to sell my Tercel after a rather brief ownership. I think it’s a pretty neat car and should go to someone who is going to love it. I would be flexible on the price if I knew it was going to ...

Re: Question about lash, or play in drive line on an 85

Petros, thanks. I picked up a copy of the FSM and will start running through all the systems more methodically. Thanks for the help!

Re: Question about lash, or play in drive line on an 85

Alright, I’ve been going over and driving the car a bit more over the last few days. It seems to be running pretty poorly after unclogging the EGR. Here is a list of symptoms from cold start.

1. Pump pedal a few times. Car fires right up.
2. Car revs up, then almost stalls, then revs up, and does ...

Re: Question about lash, or play in drive line on an 85

Thanks Tom! I got it cleaned up. Haven’t noticed a real difference after cleaning it up, but I figured out that I had created a vac leak when putting it back on. I got that fixed as well as tracked down another leak around the base of the TVSV. It still seems to be leaving vacuum from somewhere else ...

Re: Question about lash, or play in drive line on an 85

Well, I think the clunking issue is actually a fuel system issue.

The fuel system is this car is much more complicated than I’m used to (60’s VW’s) and is very intimidating. I tried to clean up the EGR and now the car is running really poorly. I’ll poke at it more tomorrow.

Re: New here with an 85 SR5

I’ll pop the glove box off Monday and see what I can see. And yes, I agree about the VW thing. I still have a 1965 camper bus. I keep it because I find it charming and I don’t mind pulling the engine 5 times a year.

Re: New here with an 85 SR5

It doesn’t surprise me that there is crossover from the Volvo/VW/Tercel world. Fans of weird old economy cars I guess! I had a 1968 122 that I bought for $100 a few years ago. It was the best, most reliable car I have ever had. And yes, the Tercel is the most modern car I’ve ever owned. It’s ...

Dang! Sorry I didn’t see that in the FAQ’s. That gives me a place to start. I’ll report back when I have more info. Thanks!

Question about lash, or play in drive line on an 85

Hello all, forgive me if this has been covered. I wasn’t able to find anything on the subject.

I have a new to me 85 SR5 manual with an issue of slop in the drive line somewhere. When you let off the gas it takes a moment then there is a clunk. When you step on the gas there is a clunk again, as ...

New here with an 85 SR5

Hello everyone! I’m new to the Tercel world with a new to me 1985 SR5 with 140,000 original miles. I just purchased the car from its second owner who I knew from work. The car is in great shape aside from some faded clear coat. It was well maintained, but rarely driven as the folks who owned it bike ...
