Topic: Number 3 piston from my old engine

Just after I bought my Tercel (in the process of being sold, btw) it cracked a piston. When we removed all 4, we found cracking in precisely the same spot. One had cracked all the way through, causing a bit of damage to the block. The other three were cracks on the order of 1/2 to 3/4 inch long. Thi...

You know, when I installed my DGAV, I was looking at the way the ports matched up on the stock manifold.
I was thinking that maybe the DFV would have been a better port match...

Have a look at my post on DGVs for a whole heap of info, including a rebuilding guide.

That sounds like a bearing, then.
Or an oil seal.

Time for you to remove the lower grasspanel and have a crawl around underneath the car :)

The other thing was the variability of the pump flow that interested me. For instance, when you're sitting at idle at the lights and the engine is getting hot, this pump would be running a lot faster than our belt-driven pumps. And when we're at full throttle at 100kph down the highway and the radia...

Interestingly enough, Shogun, the website listed reckons these pumps don't draw all that much current. To the point where you can run them after the engine has stopped to cool the block down quicker without draining the battery. My point was that they apparently give a horsepower gain and are better...

Electric water pumps

I was reading a little bit of info regarding my brother-in-law's car. Apparently, you can get an electric water pump that bypasses the whole water pump/thermostat thing. It uses a temperature probe to regulate the movement of the coolant through the block and radiator such that it keeps the temperat...

Pulling out rear window...

I've been plagued by rust in underneath the weather strip on the rear window. Every time I think I've got it sorted, the new panelbeating pops out and rust shows. So, I'm going to pull out the window, fix the damn rust once and for all and put it back in. Has anyone pulled out the rear window and ho...

Leave off, it looks great. It's what I'm thinking about doing to mine in the not-too-distant future, i.e. once I get the air comressor, spraygun and shed to do it all in. I did a bodyworks course through Adult Ed here in Tasmania not too long ago, which has given me the skills to fix all the little ...

You're having the same sorts of problems I am. It all costs, and you're wondering whether or not it's worth it. These are old cars. Parts are getting scarce. They're not what you'd normally call a collector's car. So, you either stick with it because you love it or sell it on. I think I'll sell the ...

That might be it.
However, it seems to constantly rotate stock, so I've got to watch it to get the manual I was after.

Other Toyotas....

Here's the deal. Being mechanically minded, I was asked to do a head gasket on a 1983 Corolla. No problems, I thought. Simple, 4K-C engine, no overhead cams, no real worries. However, I'd like a little more detail when I put the thing back together. I know some of us here are members on other toyota...

Very cool indeed.
The 3A-S was one of the engines I was thinking about doing a twin Weber conversion based on.

Those carbs look like the Japanese Hitachi knockoffs of SUs.
In which case, they'd run excellently...

It's not too hard, although you have to remove the glove box to do it.
Once you've removed that, the blower motor for the heating system is easily accesible.

The only problem will be finding the correct size brushes for it. That was the problem I had last time...

Bugger me, you found it :) The other one I was thinking of had a young bloke sent by a builder to get topsoil, a couple of planks and a load of bricks. He then forgets to put the handbrake on and careens down a hill, through a fence, etc, etc, etc, ending up back at the site with the bricks, the top...
