Re: Dieseling + backfiring + rough/searching idle

SinusoidalTendencies, One trick to preventing a AT car from dieseling is to shut is off while it is still in gear. The load on the engine usually keep the engine from dieseling. In addition, check the fuel level in the float bowl. The level should be in the middle of the sight glass. If you have exc...

Re: 1985 4WD Tercel Deluxe

No, I did not sell the car.
Thank you for your comment.
I decided to stop trying to sell the car since there does not seem to be much interest in the car. I just have not figure out how to delete the add.

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level

I do not recall any whine coming from the trany of my car. Can you give me an idea when you hear the whine like in first gear when the car is starting to move? You can get an idea if the temp light circuit is working by disconnecting the transmission sensor wiring from the sensor. Doing that should ...

Re: Inconsistent Transmission Oil Level

Yaut, I have an auto and I have never had the problem you describe. A few things I can think of are: 1. The transmission filter is plug and when enough oil accumulates in the pan, the pressure in the pan becomes high enough to push the oil thru the filter into the pump or when the oil viscosity beco...

Re: Frustrating Oil Leak!

Correction to my last post:
You will have to leave the flywheel on and mount the starter into position to start the engine.

Re: Frustrating Oil Leak!

I think your problem is a leaking oil journal plug at the back of the block. However, I am not sure the 3A engine has oil journal plugs since I have not been able to find a picture of the backside of the block. If you have tried all the suggested areas of possible engine leaks (valve cover, distribu...

Re: Air Conditioning Coil Resistance

I had the same problem on my 85. The problem was a broken wire that connects to the distributor igniter. The wire on my 85 is blue. The wire supplies power to the A/C amplifier. The amplifier supplies power to the A/C clutch. Look in the back of the service manual at the wiring diagrams and you shou...

Re: 1985 SR5 4x4 Wagon 15k original miles.

Chomsky43,

If you get in contact with the owner, you might want to ask him if the plates have been changed. My 85 has plates with a blue background, yellow letters, and seven digits.

Re: 85 won't start

I would try starting fluid first and if that did not work I would check the engine/ignition fuses/fuseable links/relays/ etc. After that, I would pull a couple of spark plug wires and check for a spark at each one. If I did not get a spark at the first wire I tried.

Re: Transmission issue ???

It sounds like you have a clutch problem. Either the clutch pedal free play needs to be adjusted, or the clutch needs to be replaced. Does the transmission or engine leak oil? If oil leaks on the clutch it will slip at some point. The slipping is happening at higher gears because the loading on the ...
