Can I have you get those parts and mail them to me?

Napa told me $200 US and six weeks (ah, the joys of Alaska) or else $300+ with freight. A shop quoted me 372 today to do the center pipe and muffler. Jeeubs. I'm waiting on a quote from another shop - but if you can still get an oem center pipe for >$100 cdn, I'll gladly compensate you for your time...

Only $17?

Where did you get them for $17? All of the online places I've seen thus far want arm+leg for the outer ties. Hmm.

Thanks Keith - I've got a friend with a press - guess I need to go talk to him. I picked up a couple of ball joints and seals with the bearings, though didn't want to drop another $100 for tie rods unless I knew I needed them (what are they made of, unobtanium? Guess it's a very model specific part!...

Yes, I did search.

Yes, I did, and the first page or two were all tangentially related to my question, but I didn't come across an answer, after searching 'wheel bearings', 'wheel bearing', '"wheel bearing"' and '"wheel bearings"'. Guess I'll search again. Success. Thanks, or no thanks. I'm not sure.

Wheel bearing tools question

Just a quick question - will be doing my front wheel bearings in the next few days, and am curious if the special tools indicated in the scanned '85 manual are absolutely necessary, or if my normal box of tools will get me through.

Also - any special tips?

Follow Mattel's advice above!

Call any local signmaker and one of them should be able to cut it for you in adheasive vinyl for $10 to $20. Send them the EPS file Mattel linked to and ask that they remove the logo and just cut the text. I would cut one for you and send it if I still had access to my vinyl cutter. They could even ...

EPD ships free!

Well, after pricing out an order and asking specifically, europartsdirect said that they will ship free to Alaska for $49. I've got my fingers crossed.

For the wheel bearings, are the special tools in the manual necessary, or is it pretty much a standard wheel bearing job?

Sounds good - at least it's giving me warning. Unlike on my 240 where I had a spun bearing and a quickly worn tire.

Aha!

Many thanks, Mac!

I'm hearing a little bit of a rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr coming from the front left wheel when the steering wheel is at center or left of center. Not very loud, but noticible, and absent from the RH side. CV Joint? Something else?

Thanks,
Zach

Thanks for the tips - I'm checking them out currently.

Any thoughts on engine ID? Chassis plate and air filter (I know, not terribly reliable) say 3AC, though the valve cover and block say 3A.

Online parts seller recommendations?

Hi there - Just bought an 84 SR5 Wagon with about 203k miles on the clock. It's got the 5/6 speed manual transmission, inclinometer cluster, and a couple of quite attractive rust spots - though it will make for cheap transport while I fix my Volvo 240 that another driver ran into the front of a week...
