Just a quick question this time --
On my '88, I am now getting a whirring sound from the front end when the car is in motion, even when it is in neutral. My friend and I am pretty sure it is the wheel bearings, but I just wanted a second opinion here on the forum. Thanks!

Re: Stuck in third?
Soooooo I got it apart. I think I found out what happened, but not the how or why. During the disassembly, when you slide the extension housing off, you have to twist the shift shaft up so you can get the "finger" out of the shift dogs. When I was disassembling it, I forgot about that, but...

Re: Stuck in third?
Well, I got the tranny out today. Acutally, only half of it. I split it under the car rather than taking the whole thing out. A little easier, but still a pain in the rear. I will probably tear into it tomorrow. (Any luck finding those parts petros...? No rush! :) Oh, if you also find the later styl...

Re: Stuck in third?
If your tranny is the late one (around 1985-1988) it has screws holding the aluminum shift forks to the shift rods the listing says it is a 1985, and based on the seat pattern that is correct. so it has the aluminum shift forks, and you likely found the cause. Actually I think that can be fixed wit...

Stuck in third?
Hello once again-- Close to me, there is an sr5 tercel for sale. The seller says that the tranny is stuck in third gear. Any idea what could cause this? He also said he would let the car go for $300. Is it worth it? If I got it, I would probably make the best of the two, and sell the rest. https://s...

Re: Burnt valve?
try the compression test with some motor oil squirted into the cylinders and take the readings again. If #3 does not go up much, likely it is a burnt exhaust valve. if it does go up, along with all the others, looks like it could use a re-ring job. But before you do that you might try a Seafoam oil...

Re: Burnt valve?
Those are some pretty low readings on pressure, might go up if engine is warm. If you squirt oil in the three with highest pressure and pressure in them goes up that is supposed to mean rings are worn. Are you going thru a lot of oil? I am going through a lot of oil. And I did remove all and plugge...

Re: Burnt valve?
So I just did a compression test. From 1 - 4 (rad to firewall), they were: 90, 85, 20, 75. Thoughts? I also checked the timing recently. My first question is: What line, and which way, is the check valve supposed to go on? I noticed that if it was blocking the vacuum, it was ~3* at idle, and if it l...

Burnt valve?
It seems like I can never catch a break with this car. I recently noticed that my tercel started sounding a bit different while driving, almost like it was not running on all 4 cylinders. I sequentially pulled the plug wires until I found that cylinder #3 isnt firing at idle, or while its revved up....

4a head swap
Hello-- I have two quick questions. First is, if I have a 4a head redone and swap it onto my 3a, will I lose any power? Second question is about my rear wiper arm. I bought a new wiper blade for my rear wiper, and I noticed that my wiper arm doesnt press down hard enough to fully engage the blade. D...

Re: 3rd / 4th gear woes
what did you find caused the shifting problem? Also, there is a few things you can try to lower the oil consumption: First find and correct all leaks, than try a good Seafoam oil treatment (cleans out sludge that can build up behind the rings, sometimes helps), than try "Restore" in the o...

Re: 3rd / 4th gear woes
probably not the main thing is you have to take it out to fix it Once it is out and apart, what should I be looking for? This will be my first transmission tear down, so i wont exactly know what to keep my eye out for. Obviously the shift fork issue, but what about worn main shaft / counter shaft b...

Re: 3rd / 4th gear woes
88 trannys have alum shift forks held to shift shaft with small screw. when screw gets loose it causes hard shifting till it falls out then no 3 and 4 gears. have seen this twice since shifter is hard to pull out that means cup on end is probably good tranny will have to be pulled to find out whats...
