Re: To fix or part out...

it is not really worth pouring time and money into a car with a rusty body and frame. thought rust can be fixed, to do it properly is costly, and unfortunately these cars just are not worth enough to justify rebuilding a rusty Tercel. I would use it as a parts car and put all your effort, parts and...

To fix or part out...

Hello-- I need some help on a serious decision regarding my '85 and '88 wagons. A few days ago, I had the transmission go out on my '88 wagon. I haven't pulled it yet, but I have a pretty good idea as to what happened. The bearing that holds the shaft with the gear that transfers power from the inpu...

I replaced that when I split the tranny. The oil being flung around is motor oil unfortunately :/

Frustrating Oil Leak!

Hello-- About two weeks ago, I pulled the motor from my tercel to seal an oil leak that appeared on the left rear side of the engine (also split the tranny to reseal it, and replace the countershaft bearing). I initially thought it was the pan leaking, but at this point, I have no idea where its lea...

Re: Dying Dizzy?

I got the motor back in my car (again) and tried the dizzy after replacing the pickup. It was acting like the timing was waaaaaay off, and after trying to start it, you could hear an audible clicking from the dizzy itself. Not sure what would be making a clicking sound aside from electrical arcing. ...

I bought one from locate ball bearings. $60. Do you have any advice for pulling the bearing off without a puller?

Countershaft Bearing replacement?

Hello-- This question may need input from xirdneh, but any responses are welcomed. I split my tranny to reseal it, and I noticed that my counter shaft bearing is ready to explode. I tried looking up both the nachi and toyota part # and cannot source a replacement bearing. Are there any secret places...

Dying Dizzy?

Quick question-- I was on my way to work this morning, and noticed that my tach started bouncing around 3-5k erratically, then the car started shuttering for a few seconds, then the tach and engine was fine. This happened every gear shift for the first 5 minutes, then it started losing power real ba...

Re: Burning oil.

Generally if the price is like that, it's cause they are out of stock and dont want to take the ad down If you can't find a 3a, you might want to consider a 4a commonly found in mid 80's Chevy Nova's, and Toyota Corollas. Heck, you can find 4a bottom ends in Corollas and geo prizms built from 93-97....

Re: Burning oil.

I had the same issue with my tercel. Burned oil real bad, but had barely any noticeable smoke. Replaced the valve seals, still smoked. I then burned a valve, so I ended up taking the motor out to refresh it. Turns out the oil scraper rings were gunked up with carbon, which was preventing them from m...

Re: Oil pressure dropping?

Just replaced the sensor. Still have the same issue. I'm thinking it's the bypass valve in the front cover. I'm still trying to decide if I want to fix it or get a 4a. It's half off this weekend and the pick n pulls, I may go pull a 4a bottom end and refresh it.

Oil pressure dropping?

Hello-- It seems like I can never get a break with my '88 wagon. A few days ago, the motor started slinging oil everywhere under the hood. I thought it was the front main seal, so I set off on replacing that. When it came down to the front cover, I asked my friend if he knew how it came off. He told...

Re: Stuck in third?

Figure I would wrap this up. Got the tranny in, and it works! The carb has seen better days (surging idle, backfires during deceleration, and it likes to diesel when turned off), and the vacuum lines are hard as rocks. Aside from that, the car still has some life left in it. Still need to clean the ...

Re: Bad wheel beaings?

I will keep that in mind! The noise is there going in a straight line, noise increases as the speed increases, starting around 30mph. I don't think it is diff related.
