So I was poking around under my 1984 Tercel 4WD SR5 Wagon today, looking for the source of a rattling sound, and I found that if I grabbed the carrier bearing, I could wiggle back and forth maybe 1/4th of an inch, and I could grab the bases of the left and right front trans axles and wiggle them ...

I removed the inclinometer from the dash and it turns out there wasn't enough spillage to get into the hole that the wire goes into and therefore get into the dash, so I'm all good! I just wiped up underneath the inclinometer before reattaching it. Thanks for the input!

check the front exhaust pipe clamp that it is in place and tight. It attaches to the left side of the transmission, when it rattles it sounds like it is coming from the trans. Not really a problem if that is the cause, but it is annoying.
