Re: Work in progress
Figured I'd throw in a gratuitous picture of the garage work. I'm really excited about this. Some of my neighbors are not - I live in an old Maine coastal neighborhood that's been here since the 1700s. I'm maybe 500 feet from the Ocean (not ocean front or ocean view except in the winter when the dec...

Re: Work in progress
Thanks Petros. Rock Auto actually didn't have any rebuilt master cylinders for their options right now. I read some of your old commentary describing the high failure rate of rebuilts so I didn't even really look for them. Because this car is absolutely not necessary and because I'm really just usin...

Re: Work in progress
Thanks NWMO. I went with the Raybestos from Rock Auto. Was reading old forum posts about the quality of rebuilt masters but it appears all that is available now are new ones. Going to bench bleed it when I get it and hope it solves the soft brake problem.

Re: Work in progress
I'm going to be replacing the master cylinder. Is there any best practice on this? I have two parts cars stored about 20 miles away from home. Is this a part worth plucking from a parts car, or is it better to go with a new one? Rock Auto has 4 options ranging from $55 to $82 (dynamic friction, cent...

Work in progress
I've spent part of four days with my '85 Tercel 4WD (which I had dubbed Goldie a few years ago due to her bad gold paintjob...the previous owner had gotten it painted the same color as her late model Highlander because she liked that color). It's original color is a shade of brown. I will as some po...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
That's helpful. Didn't even look for one. It's more of a "what to do with it" question if I take it out. I don't have any good options for repurposing old gas. When I do finally run the tank down, do you have any suggestions for maintenance? Worth running anything through it, cleaning the ...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
I thought about siphoning off the fuel, but decided to keep running it through the vehicle for now while I work on other things. By the time I get through everything that needs to be done, the tank may be empty at this rate.

Re: New Member and Vehicle
And after a long silence, I am back. I am sorry to see that Tom/ARCHINSTL has passed away. I haven't posted a lot, but I've did a lot of lurking in the early days when I first purchased a T4WD nearly 6 years ago. I have basically done my best to keep my Gold '85 out of the weather. The last three ye...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
Fast forward almost three years. Finally got the gold tercel on the road for regular use. It had been sitting for a while until I had time to do some small mechanical work to make it trustworthy on the road. Have put maybe 300 miles on it so far. The gas gelled up from sitting so long, but some B12 ...

Re: Nice looking car in Vermont, asking is high $9995
I'm newer to this forum, but my two cents, cabinguy, is that you're asking a lot for this car. I just purchased my first one last September, after looking in New England for a long time. The one I purchased has been in Maine its whole life and is definitely used with nearly 270k miles, but it was ru...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
I'm at 104k on this one right now. My valve cover gasket is pissing out oil - going to replace just the spark plugs and what I can easily get at this time. Despite my best fluid-filming efforts and regular OCD hot-water de-salting power washes, I'm betting that - since it's my winter runner in Maine...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
there is a reason they are called a "fleece" rather than a lease. I heard on NPR Marketplace a week or two ago that the average new car loan has topped $500 per month for the first time. Given that most new cars are financed (anyone know the percentage of new cars financed versus bought o...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
I'm a recent convert to economical wagons. I can relate to the stupidity, because I was raised (brainwashed) in a suburb where people live in this circle of consumption where they work so they and their families can own the latest greatest toys. I've since discovered, that, while this behavior is en...

Re: New Member and Vehicle
It never ceases to amaze me how little Americans value old cars - how 2,000+ lbs of highly functional metal & plastic are worth less than new smartphones. When I buy cars that always seem to be in the $500 - $2500 range, I always think I'm getting a great deal, while the person selling it is gra...
