Re: Tercel Turned Trailer?

Able, My understanding is that the transmissions tend to fail when used to pull much, typically 5th gear. I am pleased with my 4A swap and it's pretty quick around town and pulls 70-75 mph no problem with reasonable grades. However, there are a couple of long (0.75-1.0 mile), steepish hills on my wa...

Re: Coolant leak?

JD, Mine had a hole in it and I sleeved it with a thin wall piece of brass, no problems to date. However, it appears the parts are still available and not ridiculous. I would pull it if I were you and check it out, it may be as simple as leaking past one of the o-rings. Here is a good link and it in...

Re: Coolant leak?

JD, I would be doing a visual inspection when at operating temp. It may be that the leak is slow enough and in a spot that doesn't get to the ground easily, allowing any leaked coolant to be evaporated before showing itself. Thus the odor, the loss, but no puddling. Here are a few spots I would chec...

Moog 81043 springs in the front, stock spec KYB inserts in front struts. Nothing else done, no problems to date.

Re: 3A-L on Valve Cover

Hey Yaut,

As you’ve already found, the “L” apparently indicates a “transverse” engine. I know Chevrolet used the 4a in a trasverse set up for the mid 80s Novas, not sure where else they were used.

Re: Leaky front end

Thanks dlb (and Tom!), It does look like, with the proper tool (or something similar) the tool will hit the “stop” when the proper depth is acheived. I need to look up xirdeh’s homemade tool as it would certainly be handy on this job. It looks like a piece of pipe with the OD to match the housing an...

Re: We have lost one of our own.

Hey Matt, With the memorial service on a Tuesday I am sure I won't make it, but I will be thinking of your family. I placed the front engine cover behind the front seats not long ago. I don't know if Tom had the bolts that hold it in place or not, but if you lie down in front of the car and hold the...

Re: Ebay Tercel

Jimi, Is there any advantage to the later years as opposed to the earlier ones? Here is a link to a discussion on this site that covers most of the changes. From a safety standpoint, starting in 86' they included the nuetral start safety, so it won't start in gear. I've only startled myself on a cou...

Re: Leaky front end

According to the repair manual, the seal needs to be driven in 8.4-9.0 mm (0.331-0.354 inches) from the surface of the case. Hey Yaut, What page did you find this info on? I've looked through the FSM and page FA-18, but didn't find anything specific to seal renewal. Driving the outside of the oil s...

Re: Ebay Tercel

Jimi, The linked pic shows the 86’ and later model from the rear. There is a third break light at the base of the rear window and the wiper rests in the up position vs down (among other changes). I also notice the plastic license plate surround got some paint and the SR5 badge isn’t there. https://s...

Re: Ebay Tercel

irowiki, I’m not big on the window tint, but in AZ or other similar places it makes sense. I hadn’t paid attention to the third brake light. I have my honeybees in the lower pasture at my parent’s house since we moved to town, I love EL for crawling through the tall grass and up the steeper hills. D...
