Thanks for the replies - Water out the exhaust makes sense. I can't keep a muffler in this car for more than a year. There is a steady visible grip that spreads antifreeze on the ground at a slow but steady drip. It seems to be less when the car is running. It was an act of congress for me to change ...

It makes the white smoke...
Hi folks - My heater stopped working last fall about the same time that my car started leaking coolant and belching white smoke out the exhaust pipe, so I took my car into the shop. The guy said that my water pump was leaking, and that I ought to change my timing belt. He gave me a quote that was ...

help a brother out!
I've loosened the alternator and that did help with one belt, but there is another belt that is still in the way of the upper timing belt cover to the point where I can't get the cover off since it gets pinned by that belt. I think that if I lower the idler pulley, I'll be able to loosen the belt ...

help a brother out!
Thanks for the replies - I have 173,000 miles on the car, but the timing belt has been replaced about 30,000 miles ago, and looks pretty good. How do you loosen the belt that goes over the idler pulley? Is this where the starter trick comes into play? I can't figure out how to loosen it so that I ...

help a brother out!
Hi folks - I'm attempting to change my water pump and I'm wondering if I need to remove all of the drive belts to get the timing belt cover off. My repair manual just says, "Remove the upper timing belt cover" but it seems as though I might have to deal with the belts. Will I have to mess with the ...

Acetone in terc for better MPG?
This has probably been hashed out before, so apologies if so - Has anyone ever tried putting 2 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons for improved economy and performance? I'm on my second tank of this mixture and I noticed roughly a 3 mpg boost when I topped it off last time. My 84 4wd wagon has a few ...

Thanks for the input folks - It seemed high to me too (those greedy bastards!). I might try to tackle the fuel pump, but from whatI understand the warter pump/timing belt is a tougher job. I think I could pull off the fuel pump - maybe :? I'm thinking of having the compression checked to see where I ...

Am I getting hosed?
Hi All - New to the forum and looking forward to learning a thing or two. I've got a 1984 sr5 wagon (173,000miles)that I love, but recently the gas mileage has crapped and the heater blows cold air, both related in degrees to a bad water pump/stuck-open thermostat and leaky fuel pump. To replace ...
