Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I was considering the possibility of using AE86 headers, that is, if the clearances are right (I suspect that they're quite similar). I'd still need to rig up something with off the shelf parts for everything past it, though, so if I can grab a stock AE86 manifold for free or cheap, it's probably th...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

Success! Today's work: 1.) Reinstalled original nonoriginal carburettor 2.) Deleted BVSV vac lines to distributor 3.) Routed K line to BVSV, installed a junction to bind L and M lines, and piped this junction to the BVSV In other words, I am using the BVSV as a TVSV, and it works just fine. For the ...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I've considered that possibility. The Camry 2-pipe valve is only $20, though, so I'm tempted to try it and see if it'll screw in, since that's all I really need. I already have the basic schematic for the modified system percolating in my head. I also thought of the possibility of slaving the identi...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I think the fact that this carb sat in the trunk of a Corolla in a ditch behind a garage at a farm for two years is probably a larger component of the problem, though a fuel filter is cheap and I'm going to replace it when I get a chance real quick here. Anyway, I ran some tests to diagnose the vacu...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I've been driving the car more the last few days, and it seems now like it's more of a load problem, because it wants to occur in certain combinations of throttle position and engine speed. It's basically the low-midrange slump that every carburetted A engine I've dealt with has, but way more severe...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

On the 3AC, the bolt is located just under the upper timing sprocket, and I'm pretty sure it went into the head. It doesn't really matter, though. I was looking at photos of AE86 4ACs and it looks like their upper covers lack that bolt entirely, so I'm just going to bjork it off with a Dremel one of...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

TL;DR: it was the gas. So today I decided, as a last-ditch effort, that maybe my best friend's comment that, when the engine was on the Corolla, it had no power on the low end but plenty on the high end meant that maybe the camshaft was somehow, with the alignment marks in place, retarded a tooth. S...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

Installing the distributor with the cap in place is the exact procedure outlined in the FSM, and I can guarantee that it's how it was done at the factory. I've done it that way several times, and it always lands very close to 5. At any rate, it's one hundred percent irrelevant, because I have a timi...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

It's been very frustrating, yes. I've spent a lot of time dealing with 3A and 4A engines, and they've generally been very forgiving of all manner of maladies. The only time I had issues like this was when the Corolla's original engine had the previously-mentioned sprocket problem (which is one of th...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

Guys, I appreciate your advice, but the only way it's a cam timing issue at this point is if the lower sprocket has ground down or broken the crankshaft key and is being held in some other position by friction. While this is a distinct possibility (it has happened to me before), given that this engi...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I did all of that several times. Having changed the timing belt on an '87 Corolla with a 4AC in it, and having also pulled the distributor on the same car to replace the when it went bad, I'm pretty familiar with the process (out of necessity, of course!). It was absolutely in the right place, but s...

Re: Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

I knew it burned oil (It's a Toyota A engine, after all), but at the rate it burned oil it should have been fine. It hadn't been driven much since the last time it was topped off. That said, we did see signs of a major leak between the #3 and #4 cylinders where the head meets the block that I don't ...

Issues with 4AC swap in a 1981 DLX

Hi guys, So the 3AC in my 1981 Tercel decided to throw a rod last October - I don't know why, I took pretty good care of it. Either way, I had a freshly-rebuilt 4ALC available in a 1987 Corolla that I had given to my best friend some years ago, which, unfortunately, has been eaten up by rust. He sug...

Re: Rough idle, ECU, emissons systems, 1981 DLX

UPDATE: I had a really busy start to the year, but have quit my soul-crushing 80-hour-a-week job and have time to fix this car, but I've run into a bit of a roadblock: I'm going to replace the carb and redo the vacuum lines, but I'm not certain about the differences between carburettors. The origina...

I've got the federal one on the '82, but thanks, anyway. ;)
