1987 Tercel 4WD near Vancouver BC

It is, most unfortunately, time to let the girl go, so wanna let everyone on the Forum know before I post it elsewhere. Details and photos below. Did a ton of work the last couple years because I'd planned on keeping her forever, but lost my parking spot for her so she's gotta go. Let me know if you...

Re: After Removing Catalytic Converter ...

FINAL SOLUTION! When pulling the spark plug wires (yes, carefully ;-)) to put in new plugs, the 2nd wire left about 4 inches of the actual wire (from inside the rubber tubing) attached to the plug. The wire was fried and crispy and just came apart. Assume the others weren't much better. Replaced the...

Re: Front-End Squeal

Thanks guys! Just get the part at Lordco? Or finding a used one better? (David - pretty certain the sound is on driver's side. And definitely not a 'squeak' - a very loud SQUEALLLLLL. And only seem to hear it at higher speed but can't seem to convince Roxanne to get out and run beside the car at 80k...

Front-End Squeal

Have an intermittent high-pitched squealing noise coming from the front end that has me baffled. It will gradually increase in volume, then suddenly disappear. Live in the winter mountains where they sand and salt regularly so thought it might just be a piece of grit or sand. But has persisted for m...

Re: After Removing Catalytic Converter ...

UPDATE: Changed the fuel filter (3rd time in a year) and finally got a chance to take it on the highway. (Had been running fine on short city jaunts up to 80km/h, although sometimes hard to start when warm.) Drove at speeds up to 100km/h on the highway and everything was fine for first 50km then sta...

Thanks, guys. Got my fingers crossed it's the filter. Next will try the plugs.

Re: After Removing Catalytic Converter ...

irowiki No, haven't replaced it yet but have it here. Will try today or tomorrow. Good to heat it fixed your same problem! Mark Sorry, been meaning to clarify that - much more a putt-putt farting than actual backfire. Plugs and wires are new in the last year, but maybe try new plugs if the filter do...

Re: After Removing Catalytic Converter ...

Thanks for all the tips! And the mystery deepens. Drove 120km (70 miles) roundtrip on a mountain highway yesterday. Speed up to about 100km/hr (60mph). No problems until near the end of the first 60km when noticed a couple small bucks while going up a long hill at about 90 km/h. Then nothing further...

After Removing Catalytic Converter ...

The old catalytic converter on the '87 was cracked at the front intake, the heat shield had fallen off, it was rattling, and I was getting backfire downhill under load. So after reading some posts here, we just removed it and put in a straight piece of pipe. I was hoping the car would be quieter wit...

Re: Fuel pump or ...?

Thanks, guys. Sorry for the delay responding - been tied up. And the issue has abated somewhat. Has been starting fine again for the last couple weeks as long as I don't touch the gas pedal at all (except for initial start of the day.) I used to have to give it a couple light taps, so had to adjust ...

Re: Fuel pump or ...?

Thanks, Larry. Have replaced the filter a couple times in the last year while searching for solutions to other problems, so it's very new. But we didn't replace it when we changed the fuel pump. So maybe something got into it while we were changing the pump. Would be a nice simple solution ;-) Thank...

Fuel pump or ...?

Replaced the fuel pump in my '87 TT4 a couple weeks ago and have had problems starting it a few times since. (Only intermittent.) When it happens, it turns over fine and seems like it's getting a trickle of fuel (so not just dry cranking), but throttle pedal has no effect and motor won't start. Has ...

Re: Running VERY Rough After Head Gasket Job

Running great, dbl! Smooth as silk. Thanks. re "you gave us a bum steer" Jeez, sorry you feel that way Petros. I certainly shared every single thing I could think of with my very limited experience. Even posted video as well as a recording of the car idling. And in my defence, 4 qualified ...

Re: Running VERY Rough After Head Gasket Job

OK, time to post the result. But first I gotta say I was very fortunate to hook up with dbl during this adventure and he said something that really rang true. Said he loves owning these old Tercels and helping folks out with them because of the people he meets. They just seem to be different from mo...
