Re: Sputters or dies after running a while.
I'd park the car, take off the air filter cover, start the engine, wait for it to seem like it's about to stall and then spray something like carb cleaner down into the carb. If the engine starts running again while you're spraying then I'd suspect a fuel delivery issue. I don't know if the Weber ca...

Re: Bolt ID Question
Years ago, I bought a six-point (rather than the more common 12 point) socket just for this job. No problems since. I think it was Tom here who ground his 6-point socket down so there was no chamfer on it, just because the fill plugs are so short. I've never needed to go that far but I've always re...

Years ago, I bought a six-point (rather than the more common 12 point) socket just for this job. No problems since. Oh, I definitely only use a 6-point socket on these things. When this happened on my '84 wagon years ago, I tried everything from a torch to a chisel to try and get the rounded-off pl...

Re: Bolt ID Question
On mine the drain plug is a 24mm and I've never had a problem with them. The fill plugs are 17mm on the 1st gen. I don't remember what the fill plug size on my wagon is. I feel like the smaller size is more prone to rounding off.

Re: Bolt ID Question
So this has happened to me before and today it happened again. I was replacing the torn CV axle boots on my drive axles on my '81 Tercel and I decided to change the gear oil in the differential. I tried to take the filling plug out using a pipe extension on my socket wrench and a hammer, but as usua...

Re: Distributor sitting for years at shop
The diaphragms are rubber-coated fabric. The rubber is probably neoprene, or maybe butyl. Both of those have a shelf life of about 5-15 years before they start to degrade. Our cars are about 40 years old, so with exposure to high temperatures near the engine and hydrocarbons, that rubber doesn't hav...

Re: Bolt ID Question
The differential filling plug looks like it's been rounded off. That flat-head screw looking thing under it might have been drilled to make a hole to fill the differential after they drained it without making sure they could take the fill plug out first. I can picture them swearing as they tried to ...

Re: Stock vs. Weber
I think many Tercels didn't have that oxygen sensor feedback carb system. Mine does (1984 Canada automatic), but it's hard to get parts for it since most Tercels didn't seem to be fitted with that system. Maybe the California models had it? I don't think any 1st gen (like the poster's 1982) Tercels ...

Re: Stock vs. Weber
It will be almost impossible to start when it's cold with the choke breaker diaphragm vacuum hose disabled. That system opens the choke slightly on startup. If it doesn't, there isn't enough air for it to idle. The vacuum advance on the distributor needs to remain hooked up, otherwise the engine wil...

Re: Pulse pump missing? Smog issue
Also, my old 1978 Volvo had an actual, belt-driven "pump" that sent air down that pipe to the cat, but the Tercel just relied on the natural draft of the exhaust flowing through the system causing a vacuum in that pipe at cruising speeds.

Re: Pulse pump missing? Smog issue
I'm not sure that installing it would make much difference to the smog results. I think it just allows filtered air into the cat (right now, your pipe is drawing in unfiltered air, but still drawing in air). It also blocks off exhaust coming out from that pipe during situations when it is under pres...

Re: ISO Front fenders for 88 T4WD - Canada
Those years are for the 3rd gen Tercels (starting in '87). Although I've never seen one, they made the 4WD wagons up until '88 so there can be confusion because of the overlap in Tercel generations. If you're doing a part search for a 2nd gen, enter '86 as the year to avoid getting results for the 3...

Re: Remanufactured distributor bearings
That's strange about the non-sealed bearings. Pretty much all generic bearings nowadays come with seals (usually metal ones for electric motors). If you want an unsealed bearing so it can be grease-able, you can always pry out the seal. It's almost like someone would have to go out of their way to u...

Re: air bubbles from tank hose at fuel filter
I'm not sure what the vapour pressure of gasoline + ethanol is at lets say 15 degrees C, but Since the pump is outside and above the level of the tank and drawing fuel through small lines/hoses (restrictions), the pressure in the line is less than atmospheric (slight vacuum). Given turbulence and sm...

Re: e-brake
Dumb question, but is your brake master cylinder reservoir low on fluid? The level switch in that reservoir is the other signal that will trigger the brake light to come on.
