Re: Removing engine from automatic trans

As for the fear that the torque converter may move out slightly and not be fully engaged with the pump shaft, that can easily happen when replacing a removed transmission (it happened to me frequently as I was trying to wiggle the transmission into place). If the front of the transmission is tilted ...

Re: Timing issue

I realised last night after I posted that the same timing for 1 and 4 cylinders is probably normal. Since the camshaft rotates twice for every revolution of the crankshaft, the same timing as indicated on the crankshaft doesn't mean the camshaft is in the same place. #4 is probably firing when #1 is...

Re: Timing issue

I assume the holes (for balancing, like you and Petros mentioned) are to offset the key and keyway. I just pulled out my #1 spark plug and I verified that it is at the top of it's travel when the crankshaft mark is at Zero degrees. There's another weird thing though: Just out of curiosity, I checked...

Re: Timing issue

That's a bummer about the US vs UK gallons. You're right, my mileage isn't as good as I thought, but still much better than the US EPA ratings (24 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city). For manually checking the timing, what I did was turn the crankshaft until the mark on it and the camshaft pulley...

Re: Timing issue

There is no painted mark on the crankshaft pulley, at least there wasn't. I used a white paint marker to highlight the small notch on the pulley. It's the only notch or marking around the pulley. I didn't verify that it aligns with zero degrees when the actual piston is at TDC. A couple of times I h...

Re: Timing issue

check the position of the upper cam sprocket relative to the crank shaft using the alignment marks on the front of the head per the FSM. it is not difficult, just look at the position of the timing marks on the upper pulley with the timing cover off. that is the only way to know for sure what is go...

Re: Timing issue

pinging gets louder as it gets worse. with subtle pinging, you have to listen for it. if it's really bad, you will have no problem hearing it. i think you would recognize it because it really does sound like a bunch of pinging. it is not regular and does not occur faster or slower with revs. btw, 3...

Re: Timing issue

So retarding the timing this morning to "only" 30 degrees BTDC was a bad idea. There was no power and acceleration was weak. I advanced it back to 40 degrees, where it seems to be fine. I think I'll leave it there and try to stop worrying about the inexplicable. By the way, is "pingin...

Re: Timing issue

When I replaced the timing belt I didn't check with a timing light (I didn't have one then). I just marked the old belt (with a white paint marker) at one tooth on each pulley, removed it, lined it up with the new belt, marked the new belt in the same spots and installed the new belt exactly where t...

Re: Timing issue

So I'm still somewhat confused. I just bought another second-hand timing light (inductive) today for a second opinion. It's still showing 40 degrees BTDC when no vacuum hoses are disconnected. So my old timing light was accurate. When the vacuum hoses are connected it's SUPPOSED to show about 15 deg...

Re: Tercel dies when warming up first time of the day

Also you mentioned the choke stays on (closed?) even when the engine is warm (fan comes on), and you have to shut it off. How do you shut off the choke? An easy way to check battery voltage or alternator output is to use the windshield wipers or turn signals. If they are moving/clicking at the norma...

Re: Tercel dies when warming up first time of the day

I sort of get it. By sitting in the driveway warming up, you leave it on fast idle the whole time. But when you push the gas pedal to leave it kicks down the fast idle and it drops to the normal rpm and ends up dying. So the dying issue is only at low rpm? I'm leaning more towards a vacuum leak now....

Re: Tercel dies when warming up first time of the day

I'm not sure I understand when the problem is. Do you mean that when you warm it up by idling it in the driveway it drives fine, but if you warm it up by driving it it dies? I would try using some carb cleaner on the carb linkages and then some silicone spray. If it wasn't for the fact that sometime...

Electric-assist Tercel wagon

There's a guy on our local online classifieds site selling battery supplies. One of the sections on his website has this:http://members.shaw.ca/Craig-C/AboutEH.html
