Re: Tercel back on the road
How did welding the floor go? I'm coming up to that job myself (there's about a 4" hole rusted through the floor under the seat). I don't want to remove too much of the interior, but I'm paranoid about lighting the car on fire. The last time I welded sheet metal on a vehicle (my '85 toyota van ...

Re: Brake booster issues?
I've had a similar issue before where there were constantly tiny bubbles when trying to bleed the brakes after changing the wheel cylinders. I went through about 2 1/2 bottles of fluid, and there was still air. It turned out to be the tapered threads on one of the hoses was just worn enough to let a...

Re: PCV hoses
The PCV hose is the one that sucks gases from the valve cover (and crankcase) into the intake. The other hose allows clean air to flow in and replace it. If you block off that hose, the gases out/fresh air in flow won't work. If oil is coming out of the hose going into the intake, your cylinders pro...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
I think the trickiest part of working on them is the placement of the components. On the Tercels (or most non super-modern cars), you open the hood and everything is there. On the van I had to take apart the dashboard to access the brake master cylinder. I had to cut a hole in the sheet metal behind...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
Mark - awesome ride, congrats Have you been over to ToyotaVanTech.com, they have all the answers to everything TV I have also learned that all the people that have something negative to say about them have never actually been inside one. They are not small on the inside, they actually handle quite ...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
Great Van, In Australia we had them as the Toyota Tarago. The model after this was simarly named and was the same as the Previa in the USA. Probably one of my favourite vans ever especially in the AWD manual format! I think in Japan it was the Hiace. In Europe it was the Space Van. In North America...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
on the auto trans, I have pulled non-running cars out of the forest, a honda CRX I got for $75 to rebuild for my daughter to drive. it was an auto trans (which was better for her being a low experience driver at the time). I got it running after much restoration/repairs. the auto trans, despite fre...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
Wow, congrats on this thing. Super quirky vehicle, and I have heard about their weird handling issues too. Apparently they are very difficult to align, they tend to wear out tires quickly and unevenly. I can't believe how much work you put into it, good for you. I hope to see it around town at some...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
I hope so too. I feel like I'm kind of stuck with it anyway since I don't think anyone would buy it and I wouldn't want to scrap it after all the work and money I've put into it.

Re: 1985 Toyota van
As far as the rusty body, I didn't put the effort into doing it properly or anything. Most of the holes were along the bottom (where I have it painted black). People will probably cringe, but I just wire-wheeled away most of the rust, covered the holes with lengths of aluminum foil tape and then sme...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
This one is also a 1st gen ('84-'85) which has a smaller engine (2l instead of the later 2.2l). I actually wanted the smaller engine for better fuel economy. Also with all the weight removed from the interior, the lack of power wouldn't be such an issue. It still accelerates faster than my tercels. ...

Re: 1985 Toyota van
I paid way, way too much for it ($800 CAD). I didn't think with my head and I was probably hoping that it wouldn't start because of the dead battery and once I replaced that, everything else would be mechanically fine. As it turns out, just about everything didn't work. The few things that did surpr...

1985 Toyota van
Back in December I finally picked up a vehicle I've wanted for years. I think the only reason I like them is their collectible vintage quirky-ness. I had a chance to buy one a couple of times before, but decided "not a chance in hell" when I actually test drove one and had a good look insi...

Re: Removal of emissions control on standard carburettor
When you accelerate suddenly with a carb, there is a slight period when the airflow increases faster than the fuel can catch up so it is temporarily very lean and lacks power. The acceleration pump is supposed to fix this condition. I'd take off the air filter cover and look down into the carb when ...

Do you mean hatchbacks? My '84 4wd wagon has fenders from an '83 hatchback and they were identical.
