Re: 1987 Tercel 4WD Wagon - Colorado 93K miles - Parts Car
Kicking myself but I ran it low on oil, no over-heat and no engine seize, but loud knocking in engine and loss of power. Now it won't start.

Re: Dragging Brakes
After changing the proportioning valve the problem of locking and dragging was happening in both front wheels which seems to indicate the master cylinder over the pushrod which would effect all 4. However, because rer233's suggestion of opening the nuts between master cyl and the booster released th...

Re: Dragging Brakes
Okay! When I pumped it up (with car running) and loosened the brake lines at the master cyl, they released. Then pumped it up again, and loosened the nuts between m/cyl and booster and the wheels really turned freely, all the drag was gone, even less drag than opening the brake lines or bleeders. So...

Re: Dragging Breaks
Something I did notice when I took out the old p-valve was that one of the lines was dry, the other ones had evidence of break fluid in them, but one had little dried granules of something in it and no fluid. Here's some words from a friend I have been corresponding with about this issue: "I th...

Re: Dragging Breaks
Whew.. yeah. The question is if I'm doing the master cylinder and have it off, does it make sense to do the booster at the same time?

Re: Dragging Breaks
The replacement proportioning valve didn't fix it. But now the sticky break issue seems to be the same on both front wheels. When I start it and pump the breaks they both stick and drag a lot until I open the bleeder valve. Seems like it has to be the master cylinder or booster now.

Re: Dragging Breaks
Okay, the new 'new' flex hose came in and I have replaced it, but still the problem remains. I'm heading to the salvage yard to pull a proportioning valve and see if that fixes it.

Re: Dragging Breaks
Neither of the back breaks lock in the same way as the front left. It's not a full 'lock' either, with strong effort the wheel will turn but returns to normal when the bleeder is opened.

Re: Dragging Breaks
While break line is on order, I jacked up all four wheels and the right rear seems to drag while the left rear doesn't. The drag happens more in one section of the rotation, so it spins okay for about half a turn, then drags. I can't find the proportioning valve in my Tercel manual. Can anyone point...

Re: Dragging Breaks
Yeah, its just the front left. I'll move on to the proportioning valve. I was thinking of changing the hose again, just in case... it is new but seems like it could cause a similar issue?

Re: Dragging Breaks
Update: I put on the 'new' caliper and the problem is still the same. If I apply extra pressure to the breaks when the car is running, the caliper locks and only opening the bleeder valve releases it. If I apply extra pressure to the breaks when the car is off, then the wheel turns normally after re...
