Thanks for the advice. Removed the shift lever. No rust and looked pretty clean. I did replace the bushing and the boot and regreased. Shifts very nice now.

I ended up having a mechanic do the noise repair. Turned out to be the right rear wheel bearing. Cost me $160 for everything. He showed me the shot bearing. The car runs a lot quieter now.
