Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

Ahhhh, it's slowly coming back to me now -- unplugging the rad fan from the temp sending unit just tests the fan, so if it comes on then but not when the engine is getting hot, the temp sending unit is faulty. It's been so long, it's amazing what I've forgotten. Thanks for the reminder, Chris. I che...

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

I just took the car for its first real test: driving to the gas station. thumbnail_IMG_0213.jpg It went pretty well! I hadn't dialed the carb in yet but the car needed gas and, you know, I just wanted to drive the dang thing. So the idle was still a bit wonky but it was manageable. I tried to inflat...

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

Update time. I rebuilt the carb and it runs now, hooray. I adjusted the float level to spec (9/32" gap from the top of the float to the bottom of the air horn when inverted, IIRC) but found the fuel bowl was still overfull so FYI to anyone else doing this, I found the float needed to be basical...

Re: Radiator blew/ engine ran really hot

Unfortunately you are correct, you cannot drive without the water pump/alternator belt turning the water pump to circulate the coolant because the engine will overheat. Do a compression test on the engine, if two adjacent cylinders have low compression the head gasket is likely blown. Hopefully that...

Re: JET - 2-way filter/valve??

You might be able to get away with using something like this, which is available at most pet stores: http://ca-en.hagen.com/Aquatic/Aeration/Accessories/A1172 It's normally used for regulating air flow in fish tanks. Looking at the test in the FSM, I'm not clear how the jet is actually supposed to w...

Long time no see indeed! Thanks for keeping things running smoothly here. I hadn't noticed the email thing, or anything else that needs attention.

Re: carb numbers

thanks for the insight guys. is the FSM carb rebuild section pretty concise or is there any other steps or processes? any tips are appreciated, thanks The two times I have rebuilt Tercel carbs, I have just followed the steps that come in the carb rebuild kit. You basically just remove about 70 smal...

Re: carb fuel level still too high

if you replaced the seat and needle valve the level has to be reset since you changed the relationship between the float and needle valve. Thanks Peter. What do you mean by "the level has to be reset"? Should I drain the fuel out of the bowl? I assumed that would happen once the engine st...

Re: First tercel burning oil

Welcome to the forum, DM. Have you gone over the emissions systems yet? They seem like a lot at first glance but if you use the factory service manual (aka FSM) found on this site and go over each system on its own, it's pretty easy to make sure each system is working and they are connected properly...

carb fuel level still too high

I rebuilt a carb recently because the thing barely ran, and I could see the level in the carb fuel window was too full (it was just above the top of the glass so when I shook the car I could see the level come down into sight for just a second). Tested the float and it's good, adjusted the float lev...

Re: carb numbers

Is that on the little metal tag on the air horn? I don't think any of mine have still had that tag. When you rebuild it and remove the jets, you will see numbers stamped on the jets that indicate their size (bigger #s = bigger holes). The one I just rebuild was 159 and 109 which seems pretty common....

Re: INT / intermittent wipers?

some of the base models only had low and high wiper modes, but most later ones also have an intermittent setting. However, someone discovered the Same years toyota Forerunners have adjustable intermittent wipers multi switch that will fit into the tercel. a good junk yard find, you will have to tri...

Re: what kind of cleaner to use during carb rebuild?

I ended up not soaking anything when I rebuilt my carb last week. Just sprayed carb cleaner, wiped and brushed, and used fine soft wires to clean out the various passages. It was quite painless actually. If I was going to scrub the entire carb to make it look new, that would have been a different st...

I believe they were referring to Splatterdog's EGR -> PCV conversion, for people with Weber carbs who need to remove the phenolic spacer (with its PCV port) in order to clear the hood.
