Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

Today I got the transmission back in the car. Still have to reinstall the starter, distributor, and some other things, plus I'm waiting for some heater hoses from rock auto to show up, before I can test everything but I'm really glad to be done the biggest, most labour-intensive parts of the job. Th...

Re: Blowing black smoke and is running rough.

Remember there are two idle speed screws. One is for the "fast idle" (aka initial idle when the car is started and cold), the other is for regular idle. Have you looked through the factory service manual here on the forum? It's pretty useful for stuff like this. It's impossible to set the ...

Re: Blowing black smoke and is running rough.

Welcome to the forum. Black exhaust is a sign of excess fuel, in other words it's running way too rich. A common cause of that is a ruptured AAP diaphragm on the carb -- I know you swapped the carb but AAP's fail fairly frequently, plus it's easy to check so that's the first thing I'd look at. Have ...

Re: clutch installation questions

Pilot bearing should be fine. Clutch disc in? correct side out (in the FSM)? did you use an alinement tool? When you install the PP, there is resistance due to the PP force on the clutch plate as well. That may be part of what you were noticing. Yup, clutch installed flat side facing forward, with ...

Re: after many years, I'm finally back in the T4 game

I've been making slow progress on this. I was waiting for parts from Rockauto to arrive, most of them have now so I've installed a bunch of them but I'm still waiting on some trans output seals for the CV axles, and a 4wd shifter seal I ordered from ebay. I want to put those in before the trans goes...

Re: clutch installation questions

Boy I was really out to lunch on this. I thought the pilot bearing was pressed into the flywheel, not the end of the crankshaft. I went to put it in the flywheel and was like "dang they put the wrong pilot bearing in this clutch kit," then I looked at the old one and realized something was...

Re: Charge and brake light on still after replacing alternator & voltage regulator

welcome, boranederek. The charge and brake lights being on usually does indicate a problem with the alternator -- I assume you have double checked all the connections to make sure they are all secure? The belt is snug? My next guess after those would be a bad-out-of-the-box alternator or voltage reg...

Re: clutch installation questions

Ah heck. I removed the pilot bearing from the flywheel before I removed the flywheel, didn't even think to note its depth then. I thought it was just flush with the rear face of the flywheel.

clutch installation questions

I'm about to install the new clutch on my 83 but have a few questions about some of the details. 1) can I tap the pilot bearing into place in the flywheel or do I need to have it pressed in? 2) same thing but with the release bearing: can I tap it onto its retainer or does it need to be pressed on? ...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

the type with the third port I think is for the later emissions quipped cars, at certain driving conditions it retards the timing to reduce NOx emissions. It reduced max power output and economy, leaving it off (capping it) will just have the emissions the same as the early models. No harm will com...

Re: Sway bar end bushings?

Hi, generally speaking it has been my experience that there must be zero weight on any bushing, joint, etc in order to accurately assess it for play but I think the internal steering rack bushing you're asking about is an exception to that rule since there is minimal weight being exerted on it at an...

Re: Distributor vacuum advance diaphragm adventures

Well, I made a few attempts but they all failed. I got it back together but it was leaking from around the crimp so I took it apart and gooped both diaphragms up on both sides of those and that was better but still no good. So, if someone has a good 2- or 3-port vacuum advance unit they'd be will to...

Re: Do I need to be able to remove all filler plugs?

Welcome, Mogordo. You only need to remove one filler plug to refill the trans. I always used the one by the driver side CV axle, I found it the easiest to access. Popping out of gear at all, and a whine when the clutch pedal is up, do sound ominous. It's possible the trans was run low of oil and tha...

Re: Toyota steering wheel swap

That's a cool steering wheel. Similar to the ones that came in the 83/84's here in Canada but way more spacey looking with all the sharp angles. Here's the steering wheel in the 83 I'm currently working on. Please excuse all the mold, there is indeed a falcon emblem underneath all of it, ha. thumbna...
