Re: '84 4WD in Boulder, CO - $1,500

Hi Petros - I'm also selling it because of the vapor lock problem (probably also fixable), and because it doesn't have A/C - it's getting too miserable to drive during the hot months. I'm posting it first on this forum, with many thanks for all the advice everyone has given me over the years.

'84 4WD in Boulder, CO - $1,500

1984 manual 6 speed 4WD, 232K miles, $1,500 Runs smoothly, good transmission. Gets 25 MPG around town, 32+ MPG highway. Has a working sun roof and inclinometer, good front sway bar, good tires. No A/C. Recent new parts from trying to pass emissions: EGR valve, O2 sensor, spark plugs, air filter, dis...

Re: Fails emissions test - CO too high

The EGR valve was indeed very clogged up. I replaced it with the one from Amazon garyfish listed above. This was a PITA because they made the vacuum connection so it was in the way of the big pipe from the manifold. I had to rotate it, then find a way to clamp it down to the body of the EGR, which I...

Re: Fails emissions test - CO too high

Petros: the vac line to the AAP does not have fuel in it. It also passes the tests (cold & warmed up) in the Service Manual. And I replaced it 2 years ago, a few months before the last emissions test, which passed. Mark: test (e) failed, the voltmeter always reads 0. So I did the subsequent chec...

Re: Fails emissions test - CO too high

It failed again, with almost the same value for CO. It has new NGK BPR5EY-11 spark plugs, timing is at 5 deg BTDC. I also put in a new distributor rotor and O2 sensor. Last time the emissions tech said it was running too rich. I checked the choke, it's vertical when the engine is warmed up. The cent...

Fails emissions test - CO too high

Does anyone have ideas what else I can do to lower CO so I can pass emissions? The emissions test shows CO GPM at 40, and the limit is 30. Two years ago it passed at 24.8 GPM. The HC, CO2 and NOx are all well within limits, same as 2 years ago. Here's what I've done: adjusted valves, fast idle, TP, ...

Re: starter makes loud whining noise

The fan belts are tightened correctly. It sounds like bad bearings in the starter motor, according to my neighbor who's an auto repair instructor. I found a better angle to get the mounting bolts tight, and now it doesn't move the slightest amount. Like Petros says, probably the wear on the flywheel...

starter makes loud whining noise

Hi Folks, I hear a loud whining/screeching noise when starting up. A few weeks ago it was only when I let go of the key after the motor caught that I heard the noise, now it's louder and I hear it during the entire few seconds it takes to start the engine. The engine starts quickly, the battery is n...

Re: bad CV joint or something else?

I replaced the right axle myself yesterday, and the clicking and thunking is gone. Thanks xirdneh for the excellent front axle replacement video! I avoided trying this job for years, and I'm stoked that I was able to do it myself! I whacked the end with a rubber hammer to get it past the final bit, ...

Re: bad CV joint or something else?

Hi xirdneh, The FAQ indicates the right axle, not the left one: " if it gets louder or worse when you turn left, the bad bearing or CV is on the right side, and vice versa. " Why do you say it sounds like the left axle? Is the FAQ wrong?

Re: Toyota tercel 86 (parts) - $400 Bozeman, Montana

Larry, do you still have those two axles? I need a left axle, and will be driving through Butte next Fri or Sat (July 7th or 8th) on my way from Colorado to Canada, and I could stop by. Did they work well when they were last on the car?
Thanks,

bad CV joint or something else?

My 84 Tercel 4WD has a clicking/tapping noise when making a left turn, similar to times in the past when having the CV joint replaced fixed it. If the turn is while accelerating up a steep hill, there's a shuddering/shaking too. Neither one happens when turning right or going straight. My mechanic (...

Thanks a lot guys, this fixed my problem. I cleaned the gunk out of the shift linkage chamber, and now it doesn't freeze up in below zero weather!

Re: vapor lock problem

Thanks for all the input. I used the links posted by Petros to find a gas station with ethanol free gas, and that helped a lot. It got me through the hottest part of the summer. Now that the weather is cooler, I can use the usual 10% ethanol gas without problems.
