The fan belts are tightened correctly. It sounds like bad bearings in the starter motor, according to my neighbor who's an auto repair instructor. Hi xirdneh, The FAQ indicates the right axle, not the left one: " if it gets louder or worse when you turn left, the bad bearing or CV is on the right side, and vice versa. " Why do you say it sounds like the left axle? Is the FAQ wrong?

Larry, do you still have those two axles? I need a left axle, and will be driving through Butte next Fri or Sat (July 7th or 8th) on my way from Colorado to Canada, and I could stop by. Did they work well when they were last on the car?

Thanks for all the input. I used the links posted by Petros to find a gas station with ethanol free gas, and that helped a lot. It got me through the hottest part of the summer. Now that the weather is cooler, I can use the usual 10% ethanol gas without problems.
