Re: Steamy Head Gasket Question
I'm down in Gig Harbor, out in the sticks a ways, across the Narrows Bridge(s) from Tacoma. Good to know there are other T4WDers in the Puget Sound area, at least four I've seen so far. I'm hoping to get this car mechanically sound (it was not running, left under a tree for a year, full write-up in ...

Re: Steamy Head Gasket Question
Yesterday afternoon I took the valve cover and head off the old engine, because I want to save that head, and to get some idea of what the HG job on the new one in the car will be like. The old engine had a blown HG plus unknown possible issues from pistons down. Definitely some green beads of coola...

Re: Steamy Head Gasket Question
It's official--Washington teachers rock. Thanks sdoan for your thoughtful response. I've written many a recommendation letter for students who went on to study at WWU--good school, and you live in a nice area. Mt. Baker in the fall when all the ground lichen etc. turns brilliant red/yellow/orange......

Steamy Head Gasket Question
Well, I got the replacement '85 engine in my '83 SR5 to hold water and started her up. Vroom, firing on all four, no knocks or clunks, I was thinking so far so good, but after a few seconds I look in the rear view mirror and holy crap it was belching huge clouds of steam out the exhaust. My first th...

Re: Toyota Technical Articles
I was looking at some of these articles this morning, and damn there's some great general info in there for my level of non-expertise as well as the more technical stuff. Very useful and I be going back there--thanks Takza.

Re: By-pass pipe O-rings and other leaky stuff
Well, so far so good, with the Napa O-rings and the torqued-down rear heater bolts she seems to be holding water. A few more things to button up. Like I was doing a visual scan of the replacement motor and saw that two of the carburetor hold-down nuts were missing! The other two were loose. Luckily ...

Re: By-pass pipe O-rings and other leaky stuff
That's good to know, I might do the Lowe's or Napa thing. The irritating thing about that heater inlet leak is that I had the engine out and neglected to tighten those up before installing it. And now they're a beast to get at unless your hands are the size of a toddler's. Oh well, live and learn...

Re: By-pass pipe O-rings and other leaky stuff
Well, after reading your replies I called the local dealer and he's got one set in stock. ** $3.66 per O-ring! ** Damn, food's not the only thing going up and up. But at least no guess work, so I'll bite the bullet and get them, and keep a close eye on that rear heater pipe flange issue. Tha...

By-pass pipe O-rings and other leaky stuff
I'm getting ready to button up the install of a replacement '85 engine in my '83 SR5. I filled the cooling system with water to check for leaks. Two leaks, two questions for you guys: 1. The lower end of the by-pass pipe. New O-rings, right? The guy at Napa said he's got no way to look that part up....

Re: That black can above the master cylinder
Yeah, the control for it is (was) a little mini-turn signal looking device screwed into the left side of the steering column housing below the turn signal, with the cabling run up between the column and the housing. Not too hokey if you're not looking for it, looks better without it, though. Less cr...

Re: That black can above the master cylinder
Excellent, thanks splatterdog and Petros, I appreciate the help. I had the feeling it wasn't stock. It looked like it didn't belong, like an afterthought, which I guess it is. And that little dinky wire tied onto the accel cable with a plastic cable tie is pretty sketchy looking. Not sure I'll keep ...

That black can above the master cylinder
Okay, here goes, this is undoubtedly the lame newbie question of the month! On my '83 4wd 6-spd, in the engine compartment on the driver's side up above the master cylinder--what the heck is the black can with multiple wires, a vaccuum hose, and a cable that attaches to the accelerator cable down at...

Re: Emissions: 85 engine into an 83 SR5
Well, this story has a happy ending, thanks to a local Tercel4WD member, M1Marty. He responded to my Craigslist for-sale ad for some AC stuff I was getting rid of (don't need it around here and some of the piping had gotten kinked by the previous owner somehow). So he comes over for the AC stuff, dr...

Re: Emissions: 85 engine into an 83 SR5
Wow, thanks much for the responses you guys. I'm going to print them all out and attack it again tonight. If I understood right it sounds like I can safely cap off the "hose to nowhere" from the second vacuum diaphragm to the nonexistant HAC, so that's one down, and with what you've given ...

Re: Emissions: 85 engine into an 83 SR5
Yeah I was thinking about just swapping the carbs/manifolds etc. but the emissions piping, sensors, everything on the old engine is so corroded and rotted out that I'm hoping I can just adapt the 85 emissions to my existing situation. Does anyone here have photos of an '85 engine compartment that sh...
