Fort Myers '83 on Craigslist
I've decided that the Tercel in Ft. Myers is just too far to take a chance on. The lady who's selling it has a medical condition that keeps her from driving it. She bought it from a lady who buys things at estate sales. The air conditioner went out right after she bought it and she needs the air ...

Re: quest for better mileage
Google the words pulse plugs. Alot of info about a new type of spark plug that improves power, torque, and fuel economy without adverse effects. Fuel economy increases by as much as 10%. They cost $25 per plug but last about 50,000 miles. With an underpowered engine they may make a major difference ...

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
[quote="SirNik83"]I drove from Northern California to Texas with 3 people and camping gear. then back from Texas to Northern California with 4 people in my car, camping gear for all 4 people on the roof, around 150lbs. and the contents of my friends dorm room in the rear cargo area, stacked to the ...

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
I'd use a quality gear oil with maybe a moly additive and change it out every 15K at least.
Another mod for the T4WD that works well is to remove the rear seat and replace it with a section of plywood or waferboard on hinges and legs in front. Great place to carry heavy stuff like tools and jacks ...

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
Here's the trailer I'm buying:
http://www.weiscrafttrailers.com/roughneck.html
Bottom line is if the SR5's transmission can handle occasional towing without falling apart I'll get the trailer. If that's too risky, I'll get the rooftop tent. Based on what I'm reading here, towing this trailer not a ...

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
Here's a South African rooftop tent that is very popular with off roaders on the Expedition Portal forum:

I especially like their awning with side panels. Could work well with the camper I'm considering.
Here's a pop-top conversion for Honda Elements:

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
I always thought these SAAB campers were pretty cool. just take the hatch off and back it up. No more tent..

but being wagon rather than hatch like. Our cars would be better with this set up (as modelled by ms aztek): I'm ...

Re: How Strong is the Roof?
I looked into the roof tent thing in depth a while back. The Overcamp folks suggest using at least three cross bars if the vehicle is going to be used off the pavement. So I decided to use four and spread the load out really well.

Here's what I'm looking at:

Very expensive but expedition grade material. Would be lighter than towing a trailer plus no towing, registration issues, not to mention it's still cheaper than the trailer. I've looked at conventional tents, only a few hold up with extended ...

How Strong is the Roof?
Hi guys, what's your experience with roof racks? Considering the engine size, does carrying anything on the roof put a severe strain on the engine/trans? Looking at rooftop tents, some of which can weigh 130+lbs.

Re: Toyota Van Fan Newly Hooked on Tercel 4WD's
You can fit a LOT of stuff in the rear of tercel. Camping stuff would work just fine.
You could most definitely pull a 450 lb trailer. People have managed to entire cars, but heavy stuff needs a trailer with trailer brakes. I think you'd be fine with 450 lbs.
Fully loaded though with a trailer ...

Re: Toyota Van Fan Newly Hooked on Tercel 4WD's
Thanks! Got to reading the FAQ's, etc last night and found some info. I'm talking to someone about purchasing their SR5 and want to have some idea what to expect. I'm 46, and at 52 I want to spend a few years on a Baja beach. There's a pop-top conversion for Honda Elements available now, but I don't ...

Toyota Van Fan Newly Hooked on Tercel 4WD's
Hi Everyone,
I guess while researching Toyotas it was inevitable I'd end up here. I used to own an '87 Toyota cargo van. Got into Toy motorhomes which led to buying a '77 Chinook and driving it from Montana to Texas last January. It had serious issues so got rid of it quickly. Started looking for ...
