I would use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery while it is running, to see if the alternator is charging...if you are in fact running off battery you will end up at the side of the road like so many early 90s american cars I see these days! Okay that happened to me one time too, differe...

I know a guy who used to have an 81 Celica that was pretty cool, with a 22R engine in it...and I watched him do the valves every couple of weeks for a while...he was obsessed! he would swear that there was some noise that the people on his Celica Forums suggested would cause premature wear on the en...

I would say that time/effort/money spent fixing the 84 would be better spent finding/buying a slightly newer one that wasn't completely gone. Minnesota isn't necessarily the perfect place to do such a thing but whatever, actually for now this one may hold in there for as long as I could want, who kn...

Typrus: Actually I *DO* feel quite bad about it, and I hesitate to be the guy that lets a car die...when I bought it, I did so cuz it made me laugh, such a tiny 4wd? who they kiddin? but then I found this page and I was super excited to build it up into the camping vehicle of my dreams! 30+mpg? and ...

Now I realise that probably every single person that has had a tranny with bad synchros has said "is there some kind of oil I can put in there to make it work for now" and the answer is probably no...but I thought I would ask anyway. No way am I going to rebuild anything or replace anythin...

Topic: Wierd sensor thing under carb?

Finally bought a carb kit for my 84 and when I took the carb off, I was interested to find this sensor under the car....it is basically this copper-coloured tube, directly under the primary barrel, such that the gases flow through it. And two wires run out of it. What does it do? It is part of that ...

Hm I really like both of those ideas! I am the first to admit that when it comes to carbs, I stay as far away as I can....prefering the nice fuel injection on my other cars. But I went outside and looked around and sprayed carb cleaner all over the place, things are nice and clean but the same. I di...

When driving my 84 w/ 3A-C, throttle response is crappy....at just off idle, it accelerates smoothly, and a full throttle, it's alright, but anywhere in the middle, it sputters and hesitates and generally sucks. Then, though, as soon as the engine rpms reach 3k or just under, it "takes off"...

So I DID have the right sender! I figured that had to be the one, since that's the only one I touched. I was thinking along the same corrosion lines, so I slid the thing off and on a few times, to no avail....perhaps the place where it was crimped onto the wire has gone. I will check it tomorrow and...

I just replaced my engine belts and waterpump on my 84 with a 3A-C, and it runs and drives fine, but the gauge doesn't work anymore....but it gets warm exactly as it did before and if I let it idle for like 30 minutes the fan will turn on for just a bit....so all is exactly as it was, except I must ...

This sounds like a good thing to do for a 60s Jaguar or something... but some people's jaguar is another person's 1984 Tercel. Well about MY 84 Tercel, here in Minnesota, early in it's life, it received a "Ming" undercoating which is a commercial process where you bring it in and they do t...

Takza, here's a cool idea I did one time to put a washer on a different car when it didn't have one: I unscrewed the plug enough to measure the diameter with my calipers (the cheap six dollar calipers from the home improvement store, I don't need to be sticking my Swiss machinist's ones in there) an...

That is good to know....but when I "fixed" it before with the sealant, after discovering the leak, I noticed that there was a large depression next to the threaded hole...in one spot, deep enough to see and feel. So the washer would have to be able to fill that gap... I will probably spin ...

My oil pan leaks around the drain plug and I don't like it! I have seen this on other Toyotas, I heard it is from over-tightening the drain plug? Perhaps due to the way they welded that nut/threaded insert inside the pan at the factory? Well regardless, when I bought it a couple months ago, it was l...

Also, save some cash, and don't buy the super thick cable (power and speaker). Think about it, why run 12GA speaker wire to the subs if inside the sub there is 50ft of 22GA magnet wire? Well that bit on wiring isn't COMPLETELY accurate...if there is alot of current flowing through the wires going t...
