1983 for Parts or Fixin', Eugene, OR $300

It's a fact: I have lost my will to put my 83 SR5 back on the road. The car has been sitting for two years now without me touching it, so it's time to go! It is white with the grey plastic and blue seats which are in great shape. The motor is out of it and in pieces because I gave up trying to rebui...

Re: Power Steering question

Probably not what you are looking for, but I have heard of others taking their specs to a hydraulics repair shop to have such hoses custom made. It's more of a hassle than simply ordering the part of course, but not a horribly expensive option.

Re: Detailed discussion of gear oil choices...

Some day (soon, hopefully), I will reassemble and install my motor to later report no oil consumption (again, hopefully). :P

Anyway, a complete gear oil changeover will go with it since I have absolutely no idea what is in there now.

And politely inform them that two heads are NOT better than one. ;)

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

I've pretty much decided from the compression numbers that a rebuild is warranted anyway, even if it is just the head gasket that has failed, the rings are likely nearly done at 200k miles. The up side is that the bores look silky smooth, so no overbore required. I just need to get the head cleaned ...

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

Thanks for the tip. I've already ordered everything that I KNOW I will need including new rings for another $65. I may end up doing the whole bottom end as well, but I'm going to hold off until I get a look at it.

Re: Wheel Bearings Gone Bad? ( Video Help )

to xirdneh's point, my bearings were silky smooth on the front of my Tercel while rolling at a steady cruise or accelerating, and they gave no indication of being bad on the jack stands, but they were clearly hosed when I disassembled the hub. If anything, diagnosing them can be tricky. Just try to ...

Re: Wheel Bearings Gone Bad? ( Video Help )

Check the latest prices on RockAuto.com. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think I paid well less than half that much for the bearings. (I was able to reuse seals.)

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

$88 for a complete head gasket set with valve seals as well as all new valves and guides from RockAuto. 8)

Napa wants another $100 for the same parts!

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

Ok, the head is off and stripped of everything but the valves at this point. It doesn't look too bad, but there is significantly more carbon buildup on the valve of #3, a little less on #2, and virtually none on the other two sets. I have not noticed anything obvious with the bottom side of the head...

Re: Wheel Bearings Gone Bad? ( Video Help )

If I had to judge solely by the video and audio, I would say bearing trouble. My questions however are: Does it get worse while turning, accelerating, or braking? And does it make any difference whether coasting in neutral or in gear cruising at a steady speed? When my front bearings went bad, it wa...

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

After letting the car sit in the garage for more than a month, it still won't run. Go figure. ;) Ok, perhaps it has not been a priority . . anyway, I think we have it figured out as being a blown head gasket. The rings may be in dire shape as well with over 200,000 miles on the original motor, as th...

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

Well unless there is an actual crack in the manifold or a screw has fallen out somewhere, I don't think that's it, as I have tried capping everything off to no avail. I haven't touched the car since my last post though. Now I'm simply afraid of what I might find .. . :(

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

Cam timing is where my suspicions are currently, but I'm leaning toward thinking something is worn or broken. It might just be a loose tensioner too. Doubt I'll look into it tonight though. Fortunately it is a backup car for me.

Thanks for all of your suggestions everybody!

Re: Won't stay running - help me figure this out!

So I was actually able to get it to idle somewhat at 1000 rpm without full throttle, and it will rev up much higher, but it still won't idle on it's own and pops and backfires a lot now. Pinching off the PCV hose didn't change things, nor did simply opening up the line completely. I don't seem to be...
