could be gettin a MR2.. for parts anyways

Post by thebigbread »

Ok, most of you know ive been planning on a 4age swap. Earlier today, i went with my dad to work on one of his friend's john deere. his next door neighbor (which my dad also knows) has about 30 cars, im guessing hes not doing anything since grass is growing around them (most are not driveable). anyway my dad wanted to see what he had. to my luck sat a black first-generation MR2, with a blue top 4age. he wasnt home today. but my dad's dropping by tomorrow to ask about it.

Heck, might as well take the whole car since he only lives about 2 miles on away (i live in the stix, & its two turns on a dirt road to his house).

Cool! Hey, if the body is half decent on it, you should just fix the MR2 and drive it. I think you'll enjoy the 4age more in an MR2 than in a Tercel. Also, putting an MR2 4age into a 83-87 Tercel is trickier than an AE86 GTS 4age. The MR2 throttle body points the wrong way, in addition to coolant plumbing and thermostat, throttle linkage etc. Not that it can't be done, just makes things harder is all.

the body looks good, but i really didnt get a good look at it. ive already asked my parents about a 89 supercharged MR2, but they want me to get a slightly bigger car (they say slightly bigger, but then they point out a 87 monte carlo or a camaro)

youre right about the plumbing & throttle body, but at least its not impossible (main reason i want it is because its close and heprobably only wants $50-$200 for it, knowing him)

i also agree. My mr2 is a much better daily driver than the tercel, even if the tercel had a 4age in it. The mr2 will still be faster, get better gas milage (perhaps the same), and be more fun to drive.

my plan is to grab the parts i want to put in my tercel, then part it out. id rather have the money than the car.

besides, i always see first-gen mr2s for sale, often in good condition for about 1000 dollars. id hate to buy the car, then spend 500 dollars fixiing it up when i can buy one in good condition for a few more hundred dollars.

I'd only argue that '$1000' and 'good condition' are unlikely when it comes to MR2s. At that price if you plan to keep one running, expect to do some work! And after going through the motions of pulling the motor out of mine for an EV conversion, I'd hate to have to work on one on a regular basis.

Did you complete the EV conversion? That is very cool!

No. Sadly it remains in a gutted state lacking funds for completion. There always seems to be a more important need for the money. :(

At least I found the $300 for my new 32/36 DGEV! It should be here by the end of this next week. :D

remember how i said that there are about 30 cars and most of them have grass growing around them? i spoke to the owner of those cars. youd figure he would want to get rid of them, since theyve been sitting there for years. hes fixing them up. ALL 30! i could understand fixing some of them, but a few (including the MR2) looks like it would cost well over 1000 dollars to even get them in a driveable condition.

The MR2 has grass up to the windows and its covered in dust. its been sitting there for at least 3 years.

ah well, im still looking for a first-gen MR2 or corolla GTS for parts.

If you let a car sit in tall grass in humid conditions it will be crap in a couple of years...RUST.
