4AFE swap, guys?

Post by thebigbread »

What about a 4afe for my wagon? i know the 4afe has a 6-bolt flywheel. the 4age has more power, but its 8-bolt. And basically anything i can get for a 4age i can get for the 4afe.

Its gotta be better than a 3AC!

If you want to make your life easier you could always use a 4AFC.

The 4AF"E" Is fuel injected.
4A= A family, 4 subgroup
F= dual overhead cam, economy angle
E= Fuel injected.

You can always convert a 4AFE into a 4AF.
C= California Emissions, not Carburetor.

Someone installed a 5AFE in theirs and converted it to a 5AFE with Weber carb. They said it was a beast.

4AFE= 102HP@5800 RPM
101ft/lb@4800 RPM

So its just above the trannys limit. If you are very gentle, you're tranny MIGHT last.
Did I emphasize MIGHT?

Try this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-1 ... dZViewItem

There are a couple others on ebay as well. But wouldn't that distributor hit the firewall?

Question: (for ony one who knows...)

How would you relocate the distributor from the transversely located motor to the tercel? Would you use the 3a assembly? If so, does it bolt in?

Sorry, that's three questions...

Actually C does not = California. It doesn't appear to mean carburated either as I 've seen it on fed engines, Canadian engines and injected engines. Not sure if it stands for anything.

I was told by one of the guys in my local Toyota dealer parts department that C = 'catalytic converter'

Wayne, I think your right. In the service manual, all the engines that have a cat end in C, those that don't have a cat, do not have the C. But the manual does not break down the letter designations.

I have seen several 3A's (not 3A-C's) that have a cat. My grandmas Camry has a VVT-i Inline 4 (I think its a 2zfee or something odd like that) with no C at all yet it has a cat.

Maybe C doesn't officially mean anything at all? Just that everywhere I've seen it, the breakdown has labelled "C" as "California Emissions"

I'm pretty sure it doesn't really mean anything. Look here

viewtopic.php?t=2033

Its Mickey-D's pics under his hood in new member section. Its a 3AC fed. Mine is just like his but it's 3AC Cal. Its just coincidence that in the FSM under emissions, all 3AC's have cats and 3A's don't. Apparently all 4wd's have 3AC's.

The C indicates a california spec emissions system for the year of the engine.

It may or may not have a cat, depending on the time of implementation.

U is for the japanese spec emissions package.
