Awesome!
Next time I'm up at the yard with the 2 AW11s I'll try to pick one up if it's in good shape.

Re: Manual Steering?
One thing to be aware of is that you have to swap the MR2 rack and pinion into the Tercel housing. The AW11 has rear steer knuckles, while the Tercel is front steer. You'll get backwards steering if you put a compete aw11 rack into your Tercel

Noted. Thanks for that, I wouldn't have known about that until after the rack was in

Re: Manual Steering?
Got a question on the steering racks in these.
I cannot find new bushings for them anywhere, however I can find bushings for RWD corollas. They look pretty similar.
Does anyone know if these would fit the Tercel rack, power steering and manual steering?

Re: Manual Steering?
I am pretty sure they are the same rack. note however the power steering rack is larger dia than the manual, so you would want the bushing for the type in your car.
I think Synthdesign put in a "quick ratio" manual rack in his T4wd he called "the General", I thought it was from an MR2, you have to flip it over or something, perhaps not, may have been from another model. they look very similar. you might see what he used, there is a thread on that car build in the archives from perhaps 5-6+ years ago.

Re: Manual Steering?
I am not sure if this will help any but I have a 1985 Tercel 4WD SR5 Power Steering Rack with mounts in decent condition, along with new rack boots, available. The rack has less than 52,000 miles on it but being stored for several years, apparently the seals dried out (PS fluid leaked into the boots).

I cannot remember if you were wanting to abandon power steering or just could not get the power steering components needed.
Best wishes on your rather ambitious project.

No other vehicle that I have ever owned had a heart and soul like my 1985 Tercel SR5 4WD Wagon.

Re: Manual Steering?
“PS” = power steering can steer someone the wrong way. Need to drive them into automatic transmission fluid which tercel racks require.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Manual Steering?
I'm no authority on this but I used regular power steering fluid on my tercels (I never knew they required ATF) and never had a problem with it.

Re: Manual Steering?
ATF is much less expensive by volume than "power steering fluid." Granted, a few vehicles require specific PS fluid (Subaru XT6 comes to mind) but most vehicles on the market just use ATF.

Re: Manual Steering?
I'm not encouraging anyone to use PS fluid in a t4, I just wanted to point out that I used it (unwittingly) and didn't run into any problems .The Professor wrote: ↑Tue Apr 20, 2021 11:38 amATF is much less expensive by volume than "power steering fluid."
