Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
I put it in a vise and drove all the components apart with a hammer and a drift tool. it was not that difficult. the press would be useful for installing it because you have to keep it all square, which is hard to do driving it in with a hammer.
As I recall i was able to get a punch on the edge of the bearing race and get enough room under it to get a regular puller under it.The whole disassembly was actually surprisingly easy, I thought I was going have to fight it apart, but there were no major issues a driver and hammer would not solve.
putting it together was much more tricky, took several attempts, and I think I damage one of the bearings because it went bad in less than a year. and had to do it over again. or it may have been the cheap bearing I bought on-line. either way it is much easier to find good knuckle assemblies at the wrecking yard with good factory bearings in them and just swap out the whole assembly, and usually much cheaper too.

Are the front hub assemblies the same as on a front wheel drive model?Petros wrote: it is much easier to find good knuckle assemblies at the wrecking yard with good factory bearings in them and just swap out the whole assembly, and usually much cheaper too.

Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
that is correct, i have used FWD front steering knuckle/hub assembly in my T4wd, they are identical.
to check it, get the front wheel and axle out, and than spin the hub by hand feeling for smooth bearings, pull the hub in and out hard, should be no movement. If it is tight, and no scraping, grinding or movement, it means the bearings are good. Two 17 mm bolts at the top where the strut attaches, two 14 mm bolts in the lower ball joint, 17 mm steering rod end (w/cotter key) smack hard with a hammer to free the taper, than remove the caliper, and the steering knukle is off. about 15 min to remove if nothing breaks or gets stuck.
Actually the tough part is getting the big axle nut off by hand, I use a pry bar through the wheel studs, against the ground, and the big breaker bar with a axle nut socket on it, and put a cheater pipe on the handle and stand on it, usually works (bring spray penetrating oil). if the lower ball joint is good you can take that as well, it will also take a few hard smacks with a hammer to get the taper free. I also always check the condition of the bushings on the lower arm/sway bar, usually the are bad, but occasionally I find a decent one. And the condition of the front steering tie rod ends, and take that if they are good.
sooner or later you will need all these parts since they wear as you drive them. It is a nice feeling to say do a brake job on a sunday afternoon, find a bad ball joint, bushing or rod end, and have the parts in your garage to take care of it right then and there.

Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
Yesterday I removed my front drivers side door and disassembled all of the window and latch components then prepped it for paint. I used the last of the pre mixed 884 rattle can that I ordered from Automotive Touch-Up. Then after letting it cure for 4 hours I re-installed all the components and carefully installed it. Other than being cleaner and shiner than the rest of the car it turned out pretty good. Next I'll add the stripes and the rubber SR5 trim.

Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
Last weekend I replaced my 2x4 roof rack boards with some cedar that I cut to shape.
Then yesterday I found a set of 17" Mini Cooper wheels with 205/45zr17 Potenza tires on them. So this morning I installed them. I'm going to load some gear in the back and drive around to make sure they clear, but it looks like they will have plenty of room.

Just finished modding my spare flasher. So now I can finally install the LED's that have been bouncing around in my glove box for several months.

Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
Today I repaired an exhaust leak on the T4. I wasn't sure which gasket it was so I bought both the bottom flange gasket and the upper cylinder to manifold gasket. I also bought all new bolts, studs and nuts for everything.
Unfourtunetly a bolt snapped when I was carefully removing it. It was one of the bolts that goes through the intake manifold into the exhaust manifold for the heat transfer. Once I removed the exhaust manifold from the engine I put it in the vise where I could work on it and was able to drill and extract the broken end of the bolt. It had been realy seized in there. I bought a grade 8 replacement at the local hardware store. After that everything went back together real well.
I made sure to use anti-seize on all of the exhaust bolts. I went for a drive to see if I had fixed the problem and it is sounding much better now.

Re: Another Seattle AL25 member
Yesterday I laid out all the holes for the door and fender trim, drilled them and snapped it into place.
Now I just need to repaint the stripes and she'll look complete again.

Yeah! Could you check if you have any of the access covers for the interior panel of the rear hatch in gray? I could also use a gray transmission shifter boot. The vinyl one not the rubber one. Thanks!atoyta wrote:Nice, any other parts you need? I may have them in the shed.
