► REINSTALLING YOUR AVATAR ◄
OK - at first I tried the usual of downloading from my computer (Browse), even to the extent of reducing the avatar to 50% of the "permitted" 175x175 pixels and only 12.4KB instead of the allowed 27 or so KB. Nothing worked and I kept getting an error message that I had exceeded something or another.
After conferring with dlb, I tried photobucket as he suggested, but somewhat different than his method. He specified the dimensions (I'd done that in the above attempt, but w/o using photobucket).
Now, the usual way I inserted pix into the site from pb was by copying the IMG info and simply pasting it into the post.
That did not work for the avatar.
What DID work was copying the Direct Link line from photobucket and pasting it in the avatar blank; that worked.
Dunno if other photo hosting (word?) services work the same, but that is what did it for photobucket.
Of course, you will have to d/l a photo into photobucket.
To get to Avatar insertion, go to your User Control Panel, then click Profile tab at the top, and then click Edit Avatar on the left side.

I'd suggest imgur.com over photobucket.

Man, what a PITA to get that to happen. I am a tech savvy kind of guy, but the damn thing fought me all the way. Thankfully, my OCD prevailed, and I was finally able to get something up~

Re: Reinstalling Your Avatar
I have been at this for almost an hour and still cannot get a simple picture to post as an avatar. Tom: I now have a picture uploaded to photobucket, but am still not able to get this to show as my avatar for the forum. The picture is in my library there.
1) What do you mean by "direct link"? (The address in the box at the top of IE when I am looking at the picture in photobucket?)
2) What do you mean by "pasting it in the avatar blank" Are you talking about one of those long rectangular boxes for urls in the profile area? (Tried that with the IE address and stell not there.)
Are you sure this is possible for Earthlings?
Thanks.
Dan

Re: Reinstalling Your Avatar
OK -
On photobucket, under the desired avatar picture, are four "boxes":
Email & IM
Direct link
HTML code
IMG code.
I had already resized the photo to 174x115 before adding it to photobucket (the 115 height was to maintain proper proportions of the St. Louis flag).
To get to Avatar insertion, go to your User Control Panel, then click Profile tab at the top, and then click Edit Avatar on the left side.
I copied the "Direct link" line of symbols from photobucket and pasted them into the long blank box titled "Link off-site."
It worked, as I just checked it again.

Re: Reinstalling Your Avatar
Perfect! Thanks Tom. 3 minutes. Your directions were clear and precise... and it worked the first time. What a relief!
Hopefully we can place your instructions in a location that will help the next person. From what I can tell it is not possible to use the the browse button to create a path back to the PC... which almost eveyone is going to try first. Would be good for them to know this.
Really, really appreciate the help.

Thanks for the input, Tom. Now I've finally got a new avatar image (long overdue)

Re: ► REINSTALLING YOUR AVATAR ◄
I had problems with reloading my avatar but I finally made it work.
Upload from your machine: wouldn't work
Upload from a URL:
"The upload was rejected because the uploaded file was identified as a possible attack vector."
Link off-site:
"It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."
Link off-site: this worked when I specified the dimensions

Second time this has happened: I reinstalled my avatar as described in previous post, and it showed up in my posts, but next day it's gone.

Re: ► REINSTALLING YOUR AVATAR ◄
Did you use the photobucket method outlined above or ___?
I can't really help beyond what's above, but I can pass on your method to Neu, who is the Mack Daddy of the site; perhaps he can help.

Now my avatar is showing again. Maybe it will stay this time?
Edit: right after I posted the comment above, it disappeared again! A glitch in the website?
