I am going to rebuild my carb and I was wondering if the metal plate that goes between the inlet manfold and the plastic heat thing is needed? If its not needed then I am not going to put it back in when I go to reinstall my carb.

It's called a heat insulator, and I presume it's to keep the carb and environs from overheating (?).
Maybe helps in avoiding vaporlock by dissipating the heat to the atmosphere?

the carb would probably be OK, but i bet all the vacuum lines would start cracking with all the heat.
Tercel 4WD "POWER WAGOON" with 4A-C
aka: "no powa steering tercel, oh oh oh!"
mods: ignition at 10 DBTDC and 90 octane gas.
