Vacuum Systems Necessary For Cold Starting

Post by marklar »

In the manual (pg. EM 2) as a possible cause of Engine will not start / hard to start it lists vacuum leaks in the folllowing as a possible cause:
HIC line
PVC line
EGR line
MC line

But HIC and PVC require the air intake assembly to be fitted which is kind of annoying having to put it on if I wish to try start the car, I know I have started the car without the intake on before but have no idea if the car was hot or cold it was so long ago.

How necessary is the air intake assemble when cold start?

How about EGR and MC?

I'd just use some golf tees to plug any open vac lines....maybe try some starting fluid?

its not so much that a system that operated on engive vacuum isn't functioning properly that will cause a hard starting problem. Its the fact that if you have a vacuum leak, the engine is sucking in air without fuel. no fuel, no start.

Various tuning procedures (including the FSM) recommend that the HIC line be plugged with a golf tee or similar. The PCV line is left alone, as it goes from the cam cover to the base of the carb. The other tube from the cam cover to the air cleaner is just left unplugged (or plugged; your option).
Mac is certainly correct in his statement; my poor Goldie can attest to that.
