84 rod bearings
i've pulled and taken apart my motor in search of a knock, which , just like petros suspected , would be the #4 rod bearing. I have a fsm and it shows that there are 3 different "standard" bearing part numbers. others on this forum have said, and parts sellers seem to agree, there is no ( or only a minor) difference. It turns out i have one #1 (part # 13041-15010-01), two 13041-15010-02, and one 13041-15010-03 in my engine. I have found sources for the 1 and 3, but no 2's to be found. and there are several listings that don't mention the 1,2 or 3 at all. I'd really like to know what the differences are between these part numbers before I just slap it back together with something generic. Does anyone know the differences? I am getting my part numbers based on the number stamped on the side of the rod cap, and then refering to fsm pg 83 for the part number thanks

Re: 84 rod bearings
At least toyotapartsdeal suggest that all of these have new spare part numbers:
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 10-01.html
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 10-02.html
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 10-03.html
Newer numbers have 15011 instead of 15010. But if the bearings are the reasons, you should someone let check or measure condition of your camshaft. I think that you may possibly need oversize bearings and some camshaft work at engine shop if camshaft surfaces against rod bearings are worn out. Otherwise there will be knock again.

Re: 84 rod bearings
on every one of those links it says check fit. when you press check fit button it says it will not fit a 1984 engine, just 80-81.

Re: 84 rod bearings
Yes. Aftermarket spareparts do not have such classification so it is an OEM thing, I guess.
You are also correct that your original part numbers fit originally only 80-81 3A-engines so they may fit anyway. I posted original 15010-numbers because I wanted you to look up "replaced by"-text. Here are newer ones that I mentioned:
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 11-01.html
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 11-02.html
https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toy ... 11-03.html
If you look carefully, AL25 82-84 are included in listing. However, items are discontinued so they are no longer available.
But there are also never codes to AL25, which you can look with these spare part numbers according to another source:
13041-15030-01
13041-15030-02
13041-15030-03
and they are replaced by these spare part numbers:
13041-15031-01
13041-15031-02
13041-15031-03
So there are at least three correct options for AL25-Tercel bearings for each mark 1,2 & 3.
However, I don't know exactly how they differ but I understand that you want to replace mark 3 with mark 3 if possible.

Re: 84 rod bearings
first gen 80-81 tercels use a smaller rod bearing, the bearing tang is on the opposite side of the 2nd gen tercels, and DO NOT FIT. ask me how i figured this out...

Re: 84 rod bearings
i'm still not sure of a fit. this is a motor from a 1984 tercel and the note says fits through 10/83

Re: 84 rod bearings
youll have to check the rods to be sure. i believe the early early 2nd gen motors were the same as the first gens.

Re: 84 rod bearings
update. the dealer was unable to help at all. part renumbered twice and discontinued. the manual lists 3 bearings. my bearing caps indicate that all 3 should have been used. dealer could not give specs on the 3 part numbers, but both napa and oreilly also list 3; one is .25mm undersize, the second .5mm undersize and the third standard, with no specs. i did try to measure the rod journals (only had digital caliper) and found 3 different readings; 2 journals were the same. None of the readings would accomodate a .25mm undersize bearing, and certainly not a .5 mm undersize bearing. the cylinders that were the same have a bearing with the same part number ( 4E15A) but i can't find any listing for that number on the internet. the one other bearing part number i can read is 4D476. Again , can't find a reference for that number. I can't read the 4th bearing number as the bearing is the damaged one. But i am coming around to recommendations I have read here to use standard bearings. In this case, only because the other two options won't work. I'll revisit this post after I get them delivered and installed. If anyone recognizes those part numbers, let me know.

Re: 84 rod bearings
Could you take pictures of rod bearings and paste them here? Since you give early 3A spare part numbers, would it be possible that you have an early engine?
SirFoxx or someone else could recognize if you have an early model rod caps. I have personally never taken 3A apart and I have only late model 3A's (85 or later built).
I mean SirFoxx wrote that you cannot mix parts from an early 3A so sending rod bearing pics here could be worth it.

Re: 84 rod bearings
Early rod bearings are wider and have a left hand tang, later rods bearings are narrower and have a right side tang. Rock auto has both. Early top, late bottom in the picture.
You have later style rod bearings. Measure them with plastigauge to determine what undersize you need.

yes. how are you going to know which ones you need without measuring the existing ones??

Re: 84 rod bearings
ok, help me understand this. the existing bearing has wear. the plastigauge tells me the clearance between the worn bearing surface and the crank. but i don't know the thickness of the worn bearing. i'm not sure how to take the plastigauge thickness and translate it into which bearing size i need. thanks for being patient with these questions. i am trying to understand this process.

Re: 84 rod bearings
I would assume the engine has never been apart and machined, thus a standard size crank. If you want to be sure, you could always take the crank to a machine shop and ask them to measure the journals to see if its ever been ground down, if you dont have calipers. the crank specs should be listed in the FSM
