Been making some good progress on the 87 wagon. A lot of metal had to be replaced as the body was more rusty than I first thought.
All the doors have already been patched up and have a layer of primer on them now, same for the passenger side fender.
I'm still trying to track down a driver side fender that hasn't rusted out on the bottom. If I can find one that is only rusty on the top I can graft the 2 together and make one!
So far i have done the rear inner bumper, right and left quarters, passenger rocker panel, and the passenger running board.
Spent all of today cutting the rusty metal and cleaning up the rocker panel, running board, and floor on the driver side.
I still have about 2 or 3 days left of welding before I can get started on doing all the body fill!
Yes, I know my welds are not pretty, but everything is on there and isn't going anywhere. I don't use gas, just 0.35 flux core on a Lincoln Electric MIG Pack 10.
Making some progress!

Re: Making some progress!
Wow, that's a big project! Looks like you're making good progress on it though. Good for you.
I love the hanging laundry in the last pic. I'm not a fan of summer in general but I absolutely love hanging laundry to dry on the line. It feels so old time-y to me, and it's a good way to force myself to live slower.

Yeah summer isn't my cup of tea either. Nova Scotia humidity plus the heat from welding can be brutal.

Wow, what a lot of work! What material are you using for the panels and are you going to use POR 15 as a rust prevention? Curious, have some restoration to do on one of mine.

Re: Making some progress!
Most of the main body panels I used 20 gauge steel. The floor and back plate of the rocker panels I used 16 gauge, and the bottom of the rocker and the elbows that come off the frame are made from 18 gauge. Nice part about the thicker metal on the bottom and back of the rockers is I can use any part of the rocker to jack the car up!
I do actually plan on using some POR 15 where the metal will get the most abuse. After that all of the underside, inside, and rockers are getting a coat of gravel guard spray.

Wow, big project. Should extend it's life considerably. Make sure to spray something through the rubber plug holes in the subframes, I hosed mine down with Fluid Film.
Where's the ice fishing holes?

Yessir! Once I get the car back on jacks I plan on redoing all of the undercoating because some of it got burnt / lit on fire from welding. Fluidfilm is amazing stuff!splatterdog wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 11:02 am Wow, big project. Should extend it's life considerably.
