Using 4wd in bad weather (on pavement)

Post by brianp »

Hi guys,

now that winter is coming, the bad weather is starting up. Most of it is just hard rain, but right now we have a heavy frost. I was wondering when do you guys switch to 4wd in inclement weather? I'm usually driving on pavement, but sometimes with the heavy rain, I can feel the car start to slide on the water.

Also there's the black ice to worry about. I wonder if it is alright to engage the 4wd, and not hurt the car in those conditions.

Let me know what you think!

i believe it won't hurt to have that extra traction :P

it's either you hurt the tranny or you crash the car cuz it was too slippery haha 8)

my parents used the 4wd up in connecticut in the winter and in the rain all the time with no problems - maybe there's some technical problems that i may be missing?

I don't think there is any technical problem with it, but just remember, 4wd only helps you accelerate, NOT turn or brake any better. So really, it only makes sense to put the vehicle into 4wd if you are having traction problems taking off from a light, or going up a hill, etc.
