I am replacing the radiator on my brother's new 1996 Corolla DX. It has a 7AGE engine, but I have no experience on these modern transverse engine setups.
I plan to replace the thermostat and coolant too.
Is a 180 degree thermostat stock for a 1.8L with automatic transmission and Federal-Canada emissions control system?
Does anyone know a fool-proof way to purge the cooling system on this car?

get the thermostat recommended for this car, it will run best with the correct temperature as specified by the factory.
not sure what you mean by "fool proof" way to flush, there is almost no way to clear all over coolant from any cooling system. you can drain and refill with filtered water, run it with the heater on full, until system fully warm, than drain and repeat several times. will get almost everything out.

Re: Cooling system purge on a 96 Corolla
I meant a way to purge air out of the cylinder head.
On our cars, a good start is do that thing with removing the hose from the Upward-facing heater core tube and add coolant and let coolant and bubbles overflow from that tube (with the car parked so the top of the heater core tube is lower than the top of the radiator filler neck).
I was wondering if there was another trick like that for transverse engines.
(Had to edit this because I initally said to remove the wrong hose)

Re: Cooling system purge on a 96 Corolla
I do not recall it was a problem on any transvese engined cars we have owned, including a corolla.
I would do this:
1.park the car on a hill, engine up hill.
2. disconnect the upper radiator hose and fill the engine from the upper hose.
3.and fill the radiator up to the point where any more will spill out the upper hose inlet.
4. Than slip the upper hose back onto the radiator, careful not to spill too much coolant. than finish filling the radiator.
5. double check you have all the hose clamps tight. top up if necessary and fill the over flow tank to half way.
6. run it for bit, and let cool, check radiator coolant level again and top up if necessary.
