Ok so I picked up a 1983 trecel 4wd with a 6 speed.
Looks good runs ok and has been well maintained.
My question is it has a rebuilt carb and it runs rather rich as in the exaughst smells like a car that runs rich. I have looked thru the pdf on the main page and thru my chiltons and am confused as to how I adjust the carb to factory specs.
sorry for my ignorance but I just want to get another 180,000 miles out of my favorite car.
Start by checking the fuel level in the bowl. There is a site glass on the front of the carburator, the fuel level should be in the middle. You may need to clean the glass in order to see, a q-tip works best for this.
Then check the FSM for instructions on checking the oxygen sensor. If it is bad, it will cause the carb to run rich. You should not need to do any other adjustments to the carb, unless someone else messed with it.
A common problem with our carbs is when the AAP diaphragm on the carb starts leaking. When this happens, raw gas is sucked through the vacuum line to the TVSV and into the intake manifold = rich running.
Apparently if the leak is really bad, the plug in #1 cyl gets fouled with most of the excess gas, and until the engine warms up pretty much, it is only running on cyls 2, 3 & 4. If so, and you pull the #1 plug wire, it will make no difference compared to when the plug wire is on, when the engine is is cold. And if you pull the #1 plug it will likely be badly soot fouled from the overly rich mixture.
If the TVSV is working properly, you would only notice this until the car warms up to normal operating temp. If the TVSV is bad, you could have this problem even with the engine warmed up to oper temp.
If the diaphragm is leaking, you will find raw gas in the bottom vac line to the TVSV.
To check if the diaphragm is okay, and with the engine OFF, and if you don't mind a gasoline surpise (if the diaphragm is leaking), pull the vac line to the AAP at the carb, hook up a convenient length of vac hose and carefully suck on the open end. If the diaphragm is okay, the vac line should hold a vacuum without leaking down. If the diaphragm is leaking, be aware you will likely get a bit of gas in your mouth, sort of like trying to siphon gas from a gas tank and not being careful enough. I did it more than once when I was a kid and learning the tecnique - a mouth full of gas is no fun!
I'm not sure if it's true for all Canadian wagons, but the 'Canada Manual Trans' emission layout and schematic in both the '85 and '87 FSM's show our Canadian wagons to have no ECU (computer) and no O2 sensor.
Alright I know that the tsvs is bad it is operating very slowly.
So I want to switch to the webber but my concern is will my car pass utah emissions and can I remove all the crap emissions stuff?
Also has any one used the kumho ecsta r700 on there t4wd I had them on a hyundai last year but that was the only car I used them on, how are they road noise wise in the wagon?

How well do the tires grip? Do they work well on snow? I'd consider a set if they can handle snow decently. Sorry, no experience with the tire itself. I'd expect it to be fairly noisy. My studded tires are pretty noisy on pavement, but it seems to be less noticable once above 50mpg
ok just a heads up the kumho is discontinued and I was talking about the R700 it was a very loud tire on my hyundai, traction wasnt the issue it was noise I got pulled over twice in one day for the noise a friend said he could hear me two blocks away at 55mph.
I am looking for any decent rally race tires for mainly backcountry type adventures and most of the tires available have a REALY thick sidewall.
I am still trying to find out if I will pass emissions with the webber and all my emissions stuff removed. I have a vacume leake that I cannot find I can hear it under load (like a blowoff valve on a turbo car) it's rather amusing at times but it does effect the way the car drives.
Also if I go to the JY what vehicles should have the webber 32/36 dgev? I saw it on here once before and now cannot get the search option to function for me right.
Thanks for the replies again gang, hope we have many more.
The Pinto with 2.3L comes with a Holley 5200. Basically a Weber DFEV. I dunno how well its work on our cars, but I'm going to find out once I get it fixed up.
I was riding on some 205/50R15 Kumho Ecsta 711's for a while. God did they ever corner, even with barely any tread left. Beasties. However wet+711= WEEE!!!.... Oh God... NOOO! *CRUNCH* ok, not literally, but they don't like to grip in the wet from my half-tread-gone-then-wore-till-belts-showed experience.
Never seen a R700... Seen V700's though. They barely have any wet grip.
Dunno what to recommend for rally. Have to be careful that you have enough belts and plies, lest you shred the carcass.
