Weren't there some posts here years ago on Terc keys being sorta/somewhat/occasionally interchangeable?

I knew a few people who could unlock and start my old Celica with their Celica keys... Not surprising that Subarus have the same issue.

there are only so many cut combinations you can make in a key, there will be some duplicates. when the first gen Chrysler mini van were popular I was able to get a friend's open with our key (it was tight but I got it to open), she had locked her keys inside. She was surprised, wanted to know how I did it, so not to frighten her about the security of her car, I told her I know something about the way locks work, and I speak the language of men and machinery...and a little persuasion.

On really old cars with worn out tumblers, you do not even need an exact match, just close enough. Any similar key, some lube and wiggling is usually all it takes. That is why a hidden kill switch is a good idea.
