what/where to check out in montana/idaho?

Post by dlb »

we're planning a road trip through montana and idaho this coming june so i wanted to see if anyone here could recommend any particular sights, general areas, whatever. just looking at a map, we'll probably duck into wyoming to spend a few days in yellowstone but beyond that, not sure of any other cool things in the area.

Well if you go just a little more south you'd run into Farmington, NM and the Tercel Farm(tm)
Former Tercel Enthusiast (not a practical family car anymore but they still have a place in my heart)

I hope you are going to pass through the Kootenays on your way through.

marlene, this is the same trip that you will be teaching jenn and i how to slay fish so yes, we will definitely be hitting the kootenays!

you're correct dan, the 10 mpg wonder will be our chariot. we'll probably spend 2-3 weeks on the road so we want to be comfortable. now that we figured out how to have hot showers in there, i don't think there's any going back to tenting, although i would obviously love and totally prefer driving the corolla or the tercel.

good suggestions, thanks peter.

Oh, I forgot to tell you, it is 'Tercel Parking Only' at my place...except of course for my camper van and wood truck, but the rest of them are Tercels!

I remember being impressed with the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman Montana. It was 15 years ago, but I also remember some of the best pizza I ever had at a place in Bozeman; don't remember the name.

Stop by some hot springs! They're all over the place. If you drive along US-12 into Idaho over Lolo pass. There are a few right off the highway with good parking and nice trails. I could forward a hot spring map if you're interested.

Glacier National park, no doubt. Go west to east as all the best sights are on the south side of the road. Then take 89 out of the park through the Lewis and Clark National Forest down to Yellowstone.

After viewing Yellowstone, take 89 out the south end of the park to the Grand Tetons and pick up 26 east to Dubois (pronounced dew boys). In Dubois visit the local ranger station for a map to the Double Cabin campground. Do not tell everyone about this camp because it isn't all that big, but it could well be the most beautiful campground in the US.

If you have a large enough party and a hunter in the group, you might want to backpack the Frontier Creek, it is very strenuous, climbing from 6000 to over 12,000' in about 12-14 miles. There are Grizzlies and wolves in the area now because of the tree huggers. The view at the top though is breathtaking, it will spoil you for anything that follows, except the Grand Canyon. BTW, double cabin is the location of the original cabin fever.

(Edit: great rainbow trout fishing in the Frontier Creek and further down in the Wind River. Also really good petrified wood, full limb casts, to be found.)

I'd go back through Yellowstone and up to I-90 and east to Little Big Horn. Take the Indian led tour of the Little Big Horn, you will learn things that weren't in your history books. These are led by the grandchildren of the people that were actually there.

Then I-90 east back through Wyoming to South Dakota. In the south west corner of South Dakota, you have some of the best places in the US to visit, second only to south west Utah/northwest Arizona. Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, and the Chief Crazyhorse monument.
