Been saving up since my engine gave out and the time has finally come for me to pull the trigger on my swap.

100,000km on the clock.
Shout out to Synth for all the help with the info, checking it out before I bought it and for helping me unload it.

Gonna get the clip running first before the warranty voids then it's into the tercel it goes.

Very weird indeed, it is odd having literally a third of a car. It'll be even stranger to see it running like that. I will post a clip once that happens

Where did you get the clip from?
Must have been a European car wtih the wheel on that side. I belive the specks on a euro black top motor were a little higher hp.
Good luck on your swap dont forget to read Larry's thread on his black top swap

Bought it from Foreign Engines in Lynnwood Washington not far from where I live. It is a low mileage recycler imported from Japan, Levin BZR rated at 170bhp, highest end Levin ever produced. Cost me $2184  don't like talking numbers but some one is gonna ask  Came with a c160 lsd transmission, big brakes, super struts, and a bunch other things I wont need, should help recoup a good chunk of the cost, the sum of all parts being greater then the whole (Aristotle had it backwards when it comes to cars)

I have read larry's thread too many times too count but who hasn't on this site? It is a good write up. I intend to do a few things different though, 3a flywheel and a stage two spec clutch instead of the 4age flywheel, open throttles and an ITG unifilter so no need to modify plenum, put the ecu under the dash (hopefully, need to talk to Larry about that, not sure why he chose under the seat), using a different coolant conversion kit, and I have no intention of keeping the AC.
I have pretty much every piece I need for this swap so time is the real factor now, hope to have it up and running by this summer. I will post updates.

Well after almost three weeks of too busy to get to it, I finally freed up some time to work on starting the front clip. Not too difficult, but time consuming. Swap out the fuel filter. Blow out, identify, and flare the fuel lines. Change the oil. Locate, identify, cap, and ground the cut wires. Cut a whole in the floor for access to fuel lines. GTS fuel pump in the tank. 93 Camry flexible line to hook up the main fuel line and a battery.

Sweet! This is gonna be awesome! I bought the diesel in my 4Runner from foreign engines. Thanks for sharing what you paid. Even though I would not have asked, I was never the less curious.

love the sound of that engine! very different than the ol' 3ac.

the front struts from that car can be adapted to work on the Tercel if I recall. you have to swap out the upper mount, that higher hp engine is heavier than a 3ac, the stiff front struts might be a good idea, and the piston size in the dampener is larger too.

Are you planning any transmission improvements to handle the additional 100 hp?

Petros- video barely does it justice, the engines acoustics are amazing especially with the open throttles (no video of that yet). Don't think the struts will work, not without modifying the tercel to use the same wheel hub, could be done with enough creativity but would be extensive.

Helipilot77- to start I will be using my transmission as is, it is in great shape, one of the best I have ever driven and larry hasn't had an issue with the extra power and he has done 30k so far. However I don't plan on just hoping it will last. I recently acquired a rebuild kit (with synchros!) and I have been slowly collecting new gears as well. I intend to have all the pieces heat treated to toughen them up and do a full rebuild, maybe even a transmission cooler if it's possible. Not trying to build a race car but I would like to drive it hard with stressing about the transmission.

I think that sounds like a good plan. I am also planning to pick up a spare tranny and the same rebuild kit. Instead of heat treating you might consider having them cryogenicaly treated. I think that is the route I will be going.

I have heard the off road guys have auxiliary electric gear oil pumps they run through an oil cooler for their manual transmissions. that might help if you run it at high rpms (which is what heats up the oil), but I think smooth power application and careful shifting, with fresh gear oil, is the best protection.

I have considered heat treating the gears too, but it is costly, and the parts that break are the main shaft, not sure heat treating would help. gear clusters do fail, but mostly from running low on gear oil, not from over powering it.

I suspect if you use the 4wd you will distribute the power better between the front and rear drive train. So save stomping on the throttle with the high powered engine for off road in 4wd only. I have seen CV axle stubs break off, but that is an easy replacement. Usually if the ring and pinion fails it is also from running low on gear oil.

when you rebuild your trans you will want to have the ring and pinion gear lash reset for both the front and rear diffs. There are toyota 4wd trans specialists around that can do it. They should install solid spacer shims instead of the soft crushable clearance washers. the Tercel 4wd trans is remarkably similar to the early 4wd truck transmissions, just smaller.

The front suspension on that chassis is way different. No simple way to make those struts work..and really not worth the time compared to other options.
