car stalled won't start

Post by shambug »

My 85 stalled well driving. Loss of power then died. Will start with gas pored down the carb but then die. Rebuilt stock carb. Ran and idled well before.

fuel pump? also, check there are no cracks or leaks up stream of the fuel pump, it will cause it to suck air into the line and stave it of gasoline.

Also, change your fuel filter if it is old, it will need it and it could be the cause, or contributing to the problem.

good luck.

Yes it was an itermitnent fuel pump issue. The spring had snapped off in the valve case. I removed the valve case and apon removal broke the vacuum switch connected to the water intake. What are my options?

if that is the TVSV (front top of engine) and broken where black plastic meets brass base you can JB weld it together using thin wire to hold it . there are pictures in here somewhere
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

the vacuum operated thermal switch is on the engine coolant outlet (not inlet). known as the TVSV (Toyota Vacuum Switch Valve...or something like that). Car will not run properly without it, the epoxy and wire fix is best thing to do, unless you can located a replacement (most carburated Toyota engines in all models used this same valve). When they get old, the plastic gets brittle and are easy to break.

not sure how you managed to break that if you were at the other engine of the engine where the fuel pump is located. Though I have broke my share of them too, easy to do because of location and brittle old plastic housing.

perhaps it should be called TTVSV, for Toyota thermostatic switching valve, because this type of multi valve is unique to Toyota cars.
