Cylinder head bolt washers

Post by fdmevron »

Hi! I'm replacing the head gasket for my 1985 toyota Tercel 4WD and I've misplaced one of the washers for the bolts that secure the head. Should I use a grade 8 washer, a case hardened washer or a thru hardened washer as a replacement? :oldgeek:

the factory washers are hardened, not sure of the process. they are not brittle, so likely case hardened or the grade 8 washer is good enough. most important is to match the dia. and thickness. it prevents the head of the bolt from gouging the soft aluminum, and spreads the force of the bolt over the surface of the aluminum head, and since the head is soft aluminum, a washer is necessary.

It has to be hard enough so you do not get galling between the head of the bolt and the washer, you will also apply anti-seize or head bolt lubricant to the washer, and the threads of the bolt (clean both the hole and the bolts well first).

I have some extra toyota head bolt washers, if you can wait a few days I can mail them to you. Where are you located. PM me your mailing address and I will get them in the mail tomorrow. Otherwise you will be fine with what you can get at the local auto parts store that matches the others.
