1989 2wd Tercel muffler replacement problem

Post by IonicMuffin »

I am attempting to replace my muffler on an 89 Tercel. I bought a new muffler, and when i got the old one off(had to cut the pipe of the muffler) the new one doesnt fit. The inlet pipe is too small! I dont know what to think, especially because the pipes looked like they were welded on. I suppose I could have someone weld the muffler onto the exhaust pipe, but I am a bit lost at this point.

If it is off by a considerable amount, they normally sell adapter reducers, If that is the correct name, at auto part stores. Looks something like this.

A muffler shop can make an adapter, and weld it on. Most well equipped auto parts stores also carry reducers, and you can use clamps. It might save a little to install it yourself with clamps, but welding it is more reliable and less troublesome in the future.

Muffler shops typically weld the mufflers in, which makes it less handy to replace yourself later on if you're not a welder. Some muffler shops play the game of insisting that you need to also replace the entire tailpipe etc. I got tired of that with with my short-lived "lifetime guarantee" Midas mufflers and replaced my last failed muffler with a straight pipe. Stuck a cylinder of "hardware cloth" inside the pipe to mellow out the rasp so it's not real obnoxious. The catalytic converter seems to do much of the exhaust muffling. Not an option if you are subject to vehicle inspection.

It really doesn't matter wether it's welded or clamped in my opinion. Once the clamps are tightened down enough to deform the steel the way they should be, they are as good as welded.
