1983 Tercel Wagon - What is this part?

Post by YoYoTercel »

Hello All,

I'm very new to this forum. Just purchased a 1983 Tercel Wagon 4x4. Doing the maintenance in the next month. Could someone tell me what this part is? It's under the Air Filter Housing. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Club! Item in question is the diaph. that increases idle speed slightly when the A/C clutch is energized.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Thank you Rer233. With reference to this diaphram, what would this be called if I were to search for this part? Is it still available new via the dealership or ebay?

I beleive that is the secondary throttle diaphragm. Very doubtful that it is still available from the dealer. The part number is 21669-15230 if you feel like calling around to check.

welcome to the forum.

if you still use the air conditioner, you can get by without that device by just speeding up your idle, it will run a bit fast when the a/c cycles on. if your a/c is inop, you can just remove it since it does nothing if the a/c is not used.

this part is common to a lot of a/c equipped toyotas that use carburetors, I have even seen them on the pickup trucks. If you go to a self service wrecking yard search all the toyota's from the 80's that were not fuel injected (they made both those years). YOu can test them by sucking on the vac line, if you can suck air through it, it is junk. You will likely find one that works. It would only cost a few dollars.

Where are you located? I may have a few in a box of parts (I have removed several a/c from Tercels, we do not get enough hot weather around here to need a/c very often, and I do not like it in the way of the engine, nor the extra weight).

good luck.

Thank you Petros. Let me first check to see if it still works. I just got the car, so there's a lot to do.
I'm located in the Bay Area - Oakland/San Francisco area.
Thanks for the offer on the diaphram. I might ask you to look if I cannot find one in the local yards.

Lubricant and test the one you have, it might just be stuck or the vac line has a leak. Always diagnos the problem before you try to fix it.
