Odd sized flywheel

Post by xirdneh »

my brother is trying to replace the clutch and pressure plate on a typical tercel 4wd wagon
turns out the engine is a "crate engine"
the pressure plate bolt pattern does not match the flywheel
the engine is marked 1A
if we knew what make and model the engine came out of the local auto parts store might be able to find the right kit

anyone have any ideas?

this is the second time i have seen the odd flywheel
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

From Wiki: The 1.5 L 1A was produced between 1978 and 1980.[5] All variants were belt-driven 8-valve counter-flow SOHC engine with a single, twin-barrel downdraft carburetor.
Came in tercels and corsa. Changed to 3a in 81 I believe in the tercels
The 1au was a Japan only engine, I believe the 1ac was in tercels
You may have possibly ended up with the 1au model

1A? Try a 1978-1980 Tercel - Japan only though

So you could try the clutch kits from a 1980-1982 tercel. Maybe look at the pictures on rockauto of the first gen clutches!

I also have a 1st gen clutch somewhere I could dig up for pictures...might be a few days

that should be the same engine, can you swap the old flywheel? did some swap the imported engine and use the flywheel and clutch that it came with? the 3a flywheels should be easy to find, six bolt at the rear of the crank, I think I would replace the odd older flywheel so you do not have to do this next time.

I also think it may have been one of those "low mileage import engines" from Japan .

Yeah, it was, as that engine was only available in Japan from 77-80.

I do not understand why they did not save the original flywheel, it is remarkable that everything else matched the odd clutch and trans input shaft.

the only practical thing to do is find a USDM flywheel locally (picknpull) and swap it out, and install the correct clutch.
