Replacement Key for Pre 2001 Toyotas

Post by SynthDesign »

I thought this was pretty general knowledge but I'll put it out there for those who didn't know.

On Pre-2001 Toyotas, there is a 5 digit code, One letter and Four numbers,on the passenger side lock cylinder. Example A0123 .
If you give this to a Toyota dealer with the year and make of the car, they can cut you a brand new key. New as in, Original key.
I have yet to have a new key not work in worn tumblers. Sometimes this even solves the key falling out the ignition while running too.

Also works great if you bought a car w/o a key too.

i didn't know this, that's great info. i did know that many tercel keys were interchangeable though. many moons ago, i locked my keys in my '91 tercel and got my buddy to drive his mom's '85 tercel wagon out to me so he could unlock my car with her keys. worked like a charm.

I, personally, like having my keys fit different cars. We have 4 running, licensed Tercs and I only need 2 keys for everything including gas doors (OK so I had to fettle with one to get it to work in the gas door  ). Nice to know where to get the codes though. :D

hey guys, figured i'd just chime in alittle :)... i actually work at a toyota dealer, and yea that definitly works, if im not mistaken i think '80-'90 tercs have an "R" followed by a # combo between 5001-6924 (dont hold me to that though, haha) but if u dont feel like lookin for the number just give the dealer ur VIN and we can pull up the code easily and make u primo key!

I just pulled the door locks out of a car I am parting out. Both tumblers have numbers on them but they do not match. The key worked on both sides and I know they tend to be interchangeable on different cars. Would either number work? Just curious.

Both Cylinders may have numbers but the passenger side # is what's important.

I'll have to take apart my passenger side door and get the cylinder number. It'd be nice to have new factory keys.

gottoyota, you might try giving a dealer the VIN # like 87 4wd mentioned a few posts up. i suppose it would only work if the locks were still stock but it might save you pulling some stuff apart.

Hi, I had to replace the back door cylinder and key in 2003, all I did was contact a real locksmith and he found the tumbler and key BRAND NEW..and I did NOT have to have an additional key on my chain.

Cost me like <10.00 put the cylinder in me self.

Just sayin check with a real locksmith.

Unfortunately my local Toyota dealer won't do keys for anything before like 1995 :(
