WTB: Connecting Rods.

Post by BaileySims »

In search of a set or connecting rods. With less that 200k miles preferably. Don't trust putting my old ones back in.

Got a full set of pistons and rods I removed from the engine that came out of my '85 SR5 years ago. Can't vouch for the condition of the pistons (engine had been overheated by the PO) but the rods are good- no spun bearings or anything. Only problem is that as I recall, Toyota used different rods and crankshafts in the early 3AC's. Near as I can tell, the early/late split is 10/83- which would make yours an early engine (provided it's still the original motor) and mine a late. You can verify this by looking the main and rod bearings up on Rock Auto or similar sites. My engine only had 120k on it as I recall. I'll bring the stuff home from work tomorrow.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
83 SR5 Silver/Blue (Snowmobile/work beater)-totaled but drivable
85 SR5 Blue
88 SR5 White (the 'good' one)-not anymore-totaled
87 fwd silver wagon a/t
87 4wd dx Cream (a/t- not anymore- now m/t)

factory connecting rods can be rebuilt by a good machine shop, the rods themselves will not fail. here is what they typically do:

1. check for alignment and cracks.
2. resize both large and mall ends to factory spec
3. install new bolts.
4. balance the set.

I do not think factory connecting rods will fail, but out of spec ones can cause problems. You will not find new ones of course, but we took factory connecting rods and did a similar process to use them in racing engines, and never had a connecting rod failure. We were getting over 1000 hp our of a 3 liter engine that redlined at 10,000 rpms.

I'll have to check on that with the machine shop then. I don't want to put it all back together and risk the wrist pin sliding out of the connecting rod and gouging my cylinder wall up again. Just want to make sure this is the last time I will be taking it apart again for a good while.

they take both the small and large ends and crush them a bit in a press, and than rebore the hole to factory spec. have them do the small end on the smaller end of the size range so you get a good interference fit.
