Glad to see you got it sorted out. I had the same problem with my long-departed '84 FWD. Sounded for all the world like a rod knock when running, and had NO power. How's the harmonic balancer look?
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
83 SR5 Silver/Blue (Snowmobile/work beater)-totaled but drivable
85 SR5 Blue
88 SR5 White (the 'good' one)-not anymore-totaled
87 fwd silver wagon a/t
87 4wd dx Cream (a/t- not anymore- now m/t)

I replaced it when the woodruff blew out the old one .its good .it's raining and replacement part is on the way be here tomorrow .wish I could get it done today fricken street sweeper is coming tomorrow and tickets for that capitol crime is 50$

It wasjthe timing sprocket .the slot for the key got worn and wouldn't keep time discovered it on accident because I started over from scratch and went through the trouble shooting procedures 4-5 times
